Yep, you can certainly go into your bookmarks folder - which is what I was doing when the maps icon disappeared. But that's what this thread was about - bringing the icon back for one click access, instead of multiple clicks to find it. Best we've got so far is two clicks via the new 'Apps' button. Typing a line into the address bar is hardly a step forward.

Of course, to really have a "one-click" link to Google maps you can just right-click the Google Maps App icon and click "create shortcuts..." then choose where you'd like the shortcut created: Desktop, Start menu, Pin to Taskbar.

But, here here is what I see in the browser area when I launch Chrome:

Maybe it's because the primary part of both my vocation and my avocation is typing, and i probably type anywhere from 25,000+ words per day, but typing a URL, especially a short one like 'maps.google.com' is hardly any more effort at all than clicking a button, considering that the click requires taking a hand off the keyboard, grab the mouse, move the pointer to the button, click it, then move my hand back to the keyboard.

But, i guess the point i was making is that way too many times i've encountered web browser users who lost a link, a bookmark, a button, etc. to a site who's URL they knew perfectly well, and therefore thought they had no way to get there anymore. I encounter more and more users who seem to have never realized at all that URLs can be typed in the address bar, and in fact, that's exactly what the address bar is for.

In all my browsers i've turned off all searching from the address bar because far too often, the browser decides to run a search on the URL i've typed instead of simply going to that URL. Very frustrating.

Very frustrating. Interesting to see that statement. I have a nephew who thought this was a great innovation. He also told me about all the wonderful advantages Win7 has over XP. So, on the laptop I purchased last August, I finally left all the Windows 7 settings alone (rather than throw all the switches that can make Windows 7 look and behave like XP), and even tried using the latest IE browser.

Six months later, I still haven't adapted or, to be more precise, I haven't been won over by any of the marvelous advances in user interface. Top on the list of "I don't get it" features is the advantage of having the address bar also act as the search bar. Having even on instance of the wrong behavior that Kelly describes would be enough to turn me off, but having it happen frequently makes the whole idea a non-starter for me. But, of course everyone is different, or as the French say (as quoted badly by Americans like me): chacun à son goût.
