Does anyone know how to trim a video using this software? The support desk was not able to offer a solution that worked.

Please watch the beginner tutorial where I show basic shortcut control how to cut a clip.
You can Split/Splice/Cut to "trim" your video down. (Press S on keyboard to cut/split the event in timeline)
You can use Fast Cut to "trim your video down.
You can use Trimmer window to set In and Out point of the video to pre "trim" your video before dragging into timeline.
