V17: Slow project opening

timpecam wrote on 8/7/2019, 1:00 PM

I have a project created on V16. Project has about 100 clips UHD material from GH5 and GH5s.

V16 opens that project in about 15 seconds. But on V17 it takes about 2 minutes. Vegas goes to Not responding state couple times, but eventually it starts to respond. Any idea why there is such a big difference?

On V17 GH5 material is now easier to edit natively, when I found also that new parameter on File I/O tab for NVDEC (with RTX 2070 Super).

Current system: AMD Ryzen 3950x, 64GB @3733, MSI Aorus Ultra MB, Samsung 980 pro m.2 drive for Windows11 and casual storage (separate drives), Corsair MP510 m.2 drive for editing, MSI Nvidia RTX 2070 Super (studio drivers)

Old system: Win10, Intel 3930K, 32GB, AMD Radeon Fury.

If I remember correctly there's kind of a RAM problem and disabling the timeline thumbnail view in Options/Preferences/Video could solve your problem.

I've noticed this also. It seems like v17 is opening the clips in batches maybe 10 at a time, processing the thumbnails, then opening the next batch (with the project inaccessible until everything is finished). Previous versions opened every clip in the timeline at once then built the thumbnails afterward with the program able to run in the meantime. I think it's probably an optimization bug that hopefully they'll correct quickly with a patch.

Oh, this did speed up project opening a lot! But still I don't think it is optimal solution as thumbnail on timeline media really speeds up timeline editing. So hopefully there could be done some optimization for this on future patches.

Disabling thumbnails did not help me with opening files faster

I do not see it as a solution. Vegas Pro 16 works fine without disabling the timeline thumbnail view.
How to make projects load faster and not to stop responding during casual footage (with proxies) cutting?
