I think you are confusing your numbers:

10:00 is 10 seconds and ZERO frames
09:29 is 9 seconds and 29 frames which would be one frame smaller (i.e. 30 frames per second with the appropriate numbers dropped on the timeline to get back to 29.97).

So, you are not missing .71 frames - it would be ONE frame.

I have also noticed that when the "new still length" is set to 10 seconds, it defaults to 299 frames instead of 300 thereby giving you 9 seconds and 29 frames which DOES match the 9:29 of the text box.

Hi James,

Here's a thought...

9:29 is referring to second and frames, if you count 0 as a frame you might really have 10 sec worth.

Also consider that in the EDL/TL you might identify an outpoint of one shot and an inpoint of the following shot on the same frame, but actually you only see the first frame of the following shot on the outpoint/inpoint... so you might consider the length of the media/event being the last visible frame of the shot (a frame less).

Sorta depends on how you program your equipment/software.

Confusing, eh?

Thanks. Jetdv is right. 10 sec. equals 299 frames default. I wonder if
Martyh might be on to something here with the previously disgussed
black frame problems. When I expand the timeline to examine the splices
of 225 still pictures with a text on each one the text splices varied about 1 sec.
verses the beginning and end of each splice whereas the still
pictures are in perfect sync on the 10 sec marks on the timeline. I had to
go through the whole thing to sync up the text numbers with the beginning
and end of each picture. They were just a hair off so I decided to render
a supposed bad text splice and it was ok.

Hi James,

re. the black frames, I'm inclined to think it may be related to sample rate and floating point math... but that's just a very un-educated guess from left-field.

I'm wondering if you can expand on the text v. still issue regarding a full sec. slop?

Martyh:
I'm not sure at this time if it is actually slop or my incompetance.
After doing 225 of these text things it dawned on me that I did use the same
template (default duration)but I did not size it properly to the 10 sec duration of the stills.
I guess I thought it was automatic. That would be nice though if there was an
auto duration switch which could be turned on an off. Then again if everything
was automatic there wouldn't be anything to do. Anyway, there were a lot of
corrections on duration (all day long) to match the stills and essentially
the text duration was a hair to long and it would slowly multiply itself
down the timeline until about 10 pictures passed and I would have to resize
the text duration about the width of three cursors. So on and so on. There are
no fades on the stills and no fades on the text template. The cursor option
is set at default (front, back, center). I wonder about that also.
Curiously, all of the stills were installed on the timeline automatically
and all of the 10 second lines matched perfectly but there were several
tiny fades activated on the entire chain. Don't know why.
I love this software inspite of some anomalies.

I'll second that.

FWIW, You can edit event durations "en-masse" using the edit-details panel, then go through and kill the gaps... that might save time for similar issues.
