1 i am shooting 1080i pal
2 my proj size is 1024 x 596
3 the media size is 1024 x 596 MPEG 2

currently my old footage is 720 x 576
which i fit to size and of course the quality drops

1 will i still get the benifit of hd?
2 is there a way i can still get the full benifit of hd on 1024 x 596?
3 which quality is better to shoot 1080i or 1080 25p? PAL

If you are shooting 1080i PAL, then your project settings are wrong. You need to select the PAL 1080/50i template in the "project settings" window.

Anything smaller than 720p (1280x720) is not HD.
Shoot in 25p if you want the film look, and in 50i if you are doing sports.

ok the proj setting clear

but what i was wondering is:

1 if i shoot some content with a normal cam 720 x 576 std dv
2 and i shoot the same instance in hdv 1080/50i but render that hdv instance to 720 x 576 and compare the two would the the latter be better or exactly the same in quality visualy ?

hope that makes sense

thanks Eugenia i realy appreciate your help

Yes, the HD version will downsample better to DVD quality than plain DV would.
