1080i to 480i-Project properties

I'm starting to shoot HDV2 1080i video which I'll be using to make SD widescreen NTSC DVDs.

So I create a new project with the appropriate NTSC DV widescreen preset. What I'm not clear on is what I need to set for the deinterlacing preset: none, blended or interpolated.

Now logically, my source and project are both interlaced formats, so I wouldn't think I would want deinterlacing at all. But I know last time I tried this in Vegas 7, when I was just experimenting in HDV about 9 months ago, my resultant DVD looked more like it had a film look than the real video look I wanted. It almost looked like it had become progressive. And I couldn't help but wonder since 480i being less than half of 1080i, if the render had simply dropped a field?

I'm also not clear if the deinterlace property setting actually affects anything involving the final render anyway, or just the preview? Based on other stuff I have read in the forum that suggests the render works directly from the source clips without regard for the project setting.

Is the deinterlace setting only something to worry about when actually using interlaced video in a progressive project, or are there other times? I guess blended is better for slow movement and interpolated better for fast movement in that case?

Thanks for any info.
