A DVD upconverted by a cheap upconverting player (there's a cheap Phillips that keeps popping up on the bargain sites) looks about the same as when the 480p signal is upconverted by your TV. OTOH, I just picked up a Toshiba A3 HD-DVD player (format war, what format war?), and 480p discs upconverted to 1080i (the player's max) look noticably better than when the Phillips or my TV (a Vizio) do the upconverting. Some say that it's as good as the Oppo upconverting players, which are highly regarded. Since the A3 is now being blown out for under $100 at Circuit City, it's a pretty good deal. BTW, the work on the A30, which outputs 1080p is that the upscaling to 1080p sucks and your'e better off with the A3.

My new PS3 upconvert is amazing. I've had about 3 upconvert DVD players to my 65" Sony HD over the past 3 years, and nothing has looked as good as on the PS3. I would rate it as amazing, this is the reason 99% of my DVD purchases the past 3 years has been widescreen.

Of course, in this instance, $$$=quality.

According to the Klipsch forum OPPO and Toshiba HD-DVD players are neck & neck for upconvert quality.
