10bit Sony YUV playback outside Vegas?

megabit wrote on 6/11/2010, 4:44 AM
VLC won't play it, WMP only plays audio - is there a capable player?

I think you might find something on the BMD website.
What do you want to play it out over?

Bob.

Thanks Bob. I just wanted to test a 4-disk RAID0 I built; inside Vegas it plays back at 10 fps (instead of 25), so I wanted to exclude Vegas overhead from the equation...

Why not use a disk test utility like HD Tune?

Bob.

megabit wrote on 6/12/2010, 5:41 AM
I do have the free (simple) HD Tune version, and while it detects all internal drives and USB or Firewire external ones, it simply doesn't see the enclosure, which is connected via eSata. This standard still cannot quite catch up!
Bu anyway, this is a temporary setup - I must purchase a good internal PCIe eSata card, anyway - the one I'm using now is the mobo's own Jmicron device, well known for its unreliability...

Connecting 4 drives in RAID 0 via eSATA is not so good I think. Basically you're using a port multiplier and software RAID. Get a good hardware RAID controller that runs 4x SATA conections to the disks from the PCIe buss.

That's my point exactly Bob - that's why I said this is only temporary; I need a new MoBo anyway...

Bob,

The only related tool I found on the BMD site has been the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test tool (BTW, my drive qualifies for 10bit, 4:2:2 YUV at full 25 fps).

What I'm still missing is a codec - VLC complains about "v210" missing. I did a search, but all I found have been a bunch of codec packages - and I'm reluctant to install anything of that sort on my main editing PC...

You should be quite safe with the ones from BMD.

Not having any BMD hardware installed, I don't seem to be able to install anything that their site offers, Bob.

Which specific BMD software do you mean?

Thanks,

Piotr

Edit: OK, so installing their MediaExpress Player - even though it cannot be launched - did add the BlackMagic codecs in the drop-down list of the AVI template in Vegas.

However, the only 10 bit one is 4:4:4 - no 10 bit 4:2:2...

Anything that I might be missing?

Edit 2:

BTW, Vegas is unable to render with any of the BMD codec, anyway...

What I need is a system-wide (not just Vegas) available v210 codec, for the Sony 10bit 4:2:2 YUV avi playback!

OK Bob - after rebooting, I do have the v210 playback in WMP (not in VLC, though).

Thanks a lot.

Sorry mate I don't think I can be of much more help to you.
I have a Decklink card in a PC but not at hand. I installed all the drivers and whatnot ages ago and well, everything worked both in Adobes products and Vegas.

The only difference I must admit is in Ppro after you install the BMD software you get specific templates for the card. Nothing like that happens in Vegas however the Sony YUV codec is interchangeable between BMDs capture utility, Vegas and Ppro.

However, in the BMD capture utility....

Oh, I see the problem :)

BMD have 10bit 4:2:2 for SD SDI capture. In HD indeed it's either 8 bit 4:2:2 or 10bit 4:4:4

Maybe the 10bit 4:4:4 codec would decode 10bit 4:2:2 once installed, worth a try.

Did you try AJA's software? The v210 codec is included in their Machina download and installs even if you don't have AJA hardware:

http://www.aja.com/support/kona-pc/kona3-pc.php

Your "machine wide" trouble might have to do with needing both 64 and 32-bit codecs to run 64 and 32-bit applications. AJA only offers their latest version in 64-bit that I can see, but there is an older 32-bit version.
