12 crashes will editing

bigrock wrote on 11/20/2012, 5:44 PM
I'm editing a project with 3 streams of HD and getting the crash below every hour or so. Getting rather difficult to get any work done, doing lots of saves. 12 seems like a massive step backwards in reliability, will not put with much more of this before I want a refund. Nothing makes me madder than having to redo work. Time to wake up Sony, 12 is a clearly not working correctly.

Lost about 40 minutes of work this time - trying not to punch something.

Make sure Indexing is turned Off on the Media drive. Set Dynamic Ram Preview to 0.

I'm getting the same problem with the recent upgrade. I can't load a single clip without 12 crashing and projects now stall! This is appalling! I'd made a commitment to Vegas since Sonic Foundry days, but the recent versions, from 11 to 12 have been nothing short of frustrating for the number of crashes and lost time.

Have you set the RAM preview size to 0? On my system that's the trick to stability. Even the smallest RAM preview buffer and it's crash city. No RAM preview buffer and V12 is amazingly stable. Try it. Maybe it's not just me and Jimsch.

I do not know if this will help or not but recently I was playing with SD video from my camera just for kicks and when I loaded the video into Vegas, Vegas was very quick to crash!

HD from the same camera and no crash at all.

Aparently either Vegas does not like certain video formats and/or has problems with certain codecs. This might be at least one reason why some have no problems while others have a ton of problems.

Maybe certain settings will make problem video types and/or codecs work better?

I understand about setting the Ram Preview to Zero as a work around and I will try that but that should not be required. This product should not be crashing like this constantly (just happened again). This UNACCEPTABLE SONY. Worst version of Vegas ever, how can they push out such garbage?

I agree wholeheartedly. I feel very let down by this paid for upgrade. Back to instability problems we had with Version 11.

There are other odd things going wrong. I tried to edit a file name in the Explorer window. Every time I tried to insert a space, Vegas thinks I am wanting to play the clip (even though preview is unchecked) and therefore refuses to allow me to insert space characters! very annoying. It worked in Version 11.

Has this release been thoroughly tested? This will give Sony and the vegas product line a bad name. Come on Sony!!!!

Set ram to 0, still crashes. In fact I can't work at all... I am totally pissed off with this release and no response from Sony regarding these problems either.

What does dynamic ram have to do with Vegas? How does it work? If you have 16GB of ram can you set it to 800 or more? I have mine set to 800 right now. Do I need that?

Hi,

I'm experiencing an alarming rate of Sony Vegas Pro 12.0 (Not Responding) crashes in Build 394.

I've recently built a new 64 bit computer with an i7 3770 CPU, an SSD drive and 16gigs of RAM.

I have a GEForce 650 with a gig of ram on there and enough cooling to cool a nuclear reactor, so I was expecting my foray in video editing with vegas pro, as in Professional to be a joy. Alas no, the number of times it's crashed this morning has effectively rendered any progress I've made this morning pointless.

I've set the indexing of the drive holding the media to off and the RAM Preview to 0.

All to no avail. I've yet to reboot the machine, to answer the "Have you tried rebooting?" question.

Are Sony going to respond to any of these posts, to at least garner some confidence? Are there prior versions we can use that'll work better?

Looking forward to hearing something.
Cheers
Colin
p.s. Oh and btw it's still 'Not Responding'

I solved this problem (symptom?) by making sure my hard disks were all spinning, that is, they were not in power save mode. OTOH I have had very little problem with V12, using Nvidia driver 310.90, GTX 660ti.
Colin Basterfield wrote on 1/28/2013, 3:35 PM
I've set the disk the media is on to hibernate after an hour. It was set to 20 minutes.

I can crash it consistently, simply by double clicking on pan / crop on a video still in the timeline.

IMHO the software is currently unusable, and hence after a huge outlay I am bitterly disappointed.

You dont happen to have an NVidia card and GPU acceleration turned on by chance?

The wife and I have identical systems with the only difference being she has an AMD card. Mine crashes several times a minute. But when I turned off GPU acceleration in the Vegas settings, its now rock solid.

Hi Colin,
did you ever get this resolved?
I'm having the same issue. Soooo frustrating.
I hope to hear from you,
Cheers,

My system is stable.

I've had each version of Vegas since version 4.

Through the years I've read a ton of posts about what garbage Vegas is.

Yet inevitably, on my system, or other folks who have reported problems here in the forum,
these problems have been resolved.

Not by finger pointing or ranting, but rather by working together and asking questions, offering solutions, reporting to Sony and sharing the results.

Sony has never failed to respond to a problem properly reported. At least that's what I've learned from personal experience and by reading ongoing posts.

Whether like 95% of the time it's a driver problem or something exterior to Vegas, or the other 5% of problems that actually have something to do with Vegas itself.

If some of you are still running build 394 then try the newest Vegas version (Build 563). The version crashing in the original post is about 175 builds old.
