Above is a link to the summary page, but the results are similar for MainConcept H.264 encoding:

Basically, a 6 core Intel i7-980X is a little more than twice as fast as a quad core Intel Core 2 Q6600 and about five times as fast as most dual core CPUs. A workstation with two of the new 6 core 5600 series Intel Xeon CPUs will probably be close to twice as fast as a desktop PC with one Intel i7-980X.

Since Vegas pro relies on CPU speed, this should give you an idea of improvements that you might see. The results in the article are more or less consistent with John Cline's render test Vegas project. Obviously, other factors such as the amount of RAM and CPU clock speed will also determine overall performance using a given piece of software, but this benchmarking article gives you a good idea of whether you want to spend some money to save time.

I'm very pleased with my new i7-960 at the stock 3.2GHz (and 12 GB DDR3 RAM, 1333). It is a quantum leap from my previous C2D E8400 with 4 GB RAM...

A few years back it looked as if AMD was producing better CPU's and giving Intel a run for their money. It is quite obvious that those days are gone and Intel has now stepped ahead of the pack by a long shot with their 45nm & 32nm technology. They are pushing Moore's law......
