16:9 into new instance comes 4:3 in P/C? Why?

Grazie wrote on 5/5/2006, 1:05 AM
okay . .

1/- Original project 16:9

2/- Apply Cookie Cutter, get the effect I want, render section as 16:9. Call this GrazieCC - ok?

3/- Bring Rendered GrazieCC back into Project and within the Pan/Crop Menu it is displayed correctly as 16:9; it is Previewing as 16:9 both on my INTERNAL and External monitor - all is right with the world.

4/- I want to work further on this GrazieCC so I open NEW instance of Vegas - set up as 16:9, I doubled, triple checked this - copy and paste GrazieCC into this new instance.

5/- Go to Pan/Crop and GrazieCC is being displayed IN Pan/Crop as 4:3. Why?

6/- Just to check this phenomenon I copied and pasted BACK this rogue cookie cutter-ed GrazieCC, INTO the original Project - Guess what? It is displaying in Pan/Crop as . . 4:3 ! That is within a 16:9 project.

Here's the kicker . . Although it IS being displayed as 4:3 within Pan/Crop display, in the original project, it is also being CORRECTLY - 16:9 - to all other Previewing. What gives here?

So to summarize: Applying a cookie cutter fx within a 16:9 project, rendering as 16:9 gets me a 4:3 DISPLAY within Pan/Crop.

TIA,

Grazie

Ok ..

Further testing is indicating to me that Copy/Paste DOESN'T bring the 16:9 info into Pan/Crop for display purposes - BUT importing or dragging rendered 16:9 GrazieCC DOES bring 16:9 display info for Pan/Crop - that it IS being displayed correctly.

Would some kind person please check this out for me?

I thank you ..

Check the media to see if it's flagged as 16:9, I suspect that's all the problem is. Vegas regularly fails to see the 16:9 flag on lots of media.

Thank you Bob. Yo mean the Media Properties? Well the pasted back media IS showing 16:9 BUT displaying Pan/Crop as 4:3. Imported OR dragged from a folder it displays correctly within Pan/Crop as 16:9

Vegas regularly fails to see the 16:9 flag on lots of media.

I can't comment on that. However, pasting the event does exhibit this 4:3 anomaly within Pan/Crop. If somebody could/would confirm or deny this then I might be convinced to send it off to SONY.

Bob, here's another "kicker" I just discovered - using your invitation to "check" the properties.

I took the step of "changing" the properties FROM what it says PAL Widescreen to PAL. BUT then I changed the properties BACK to PAL widescreen, and guess what? It forced widescreen into Pan/Crop display!!

So again, it would appear that Pasting doesn't bring the 16:9 BUT forcing 16:9 backwards and forwards THRU' 4:3 makes Pan/Crop reflect 16:9 as it should.

Any takers to test this? Please?

I haven't tried to repo your precise problem but I do a lot of 16:9 and deal with this kind of issue all the time.

What I see is that Vegas simply fails to read the flag. Rclick the event and change to PAR to reflect the correct AR and that fixes it in that project, Vegas probably tracks this through the media pool.
However that doesn't fix the problem with the file / how Vegas reads it. I see the same problem with Vegas not seeing the apha channel in uncompressed avi.

There is something wrong here, and it's been wrong from day 1 for me, it's hardly a show stopper but it should have been fixed years ago. Makes me have serious doubts about the amount of effort that goes into alpha testing of the product.

I've not jumped up and down about this because I know that with media captured from tape it is possible that these flags are not preserved however when Vegas can't read the flags from media that IT creates something is wrong.

Hi Grazie. I went through step by step but could not repro what you are seeing. When I copy and paste the rendered clip from the first project into the new project and then look at it either in Preview or the Pan/Crop window, it is 16:9 as it should be. This works whether the new project is 4:3 or 16:9.

Sorry mate, must be some setting on your system, but for the life of me I cannot think what it could be. (In case it is relevant, I'm using Vegas 6.0d Build 210.)

Grazie,

I've seen this lately, like V6c or V6d. I can't remember the exact sequence I went through, but it's like the copy/paste looses the aspect ratio in certain instances.

No time lately to investigate, but your not crazy. At least not in this instance!
