16:9 to Letterbox

Hey,

I just bought two PD170s (woo hoo!) for my next film project and I’m wanting to figure this out BEFORE I start filming.

My last camera (JVC HD1), when filming in wide screen mode, gave me a Letterbox (16:9 inside a 4:3 screen) image.

My PD170s (woo hoo!), when filming in wide screen mode, gives me a true 16:9 image.

Now for my question…

I need the final product, when I render the project, to be Letterbox (16:9 inside a 4:3 screen).

How do I get the 16:9 image to render as Letterbox?

Thanks!!!!

Why? Wouldn't you rather have everything be true widescreen? In which case, you'll need to crop your old footage -- but all you'd be losing is the letterboxing. (Assuming you want to use footage from your old camera in the same project as footage from your new cameras.)

If that's what you really want, just put your 16:9 footage in a 4:3 project. Vegas will automatically letterbox it.
