16x9 has small black bars top and bottom on 16x9 set?

Please help....

I've shot anamorphic video using a Sony VX2000 and anamorphic lens (Century).
The project properties is set to 16x9 (1.2121 DV NTSC) and the imported media properties is set to 16x9 (1.2121 DV NTSC).
The preview window shows small black bars top and bottom. Is this normal? or, should the preview window be 16x9 too. The preview window looks like it's widescreen.

Also, when I saved the mpeg-2 (using 16x9)I created a DVD-R. I have a widescreen
television. I also see small balck bars on my widescreen set hooked up to my set top DVD player. Normal movie DVDs play without the black bars. Unless of course they are 2.35 aspect ratio.
Well I'm confused because it looks darn good even with the small black bars.

The thing that's odd about this it that I have another 16x9 video set with the same settings that do not have the black bars... what the? I must be missing something...
Thanks, Steve

Hi Steve,

When you shoot 4:3 can you see the black bars?

Might be worth checking... I know some cams have some black edges.

Also, does steadyshot on/off make any diff?

Not all 16:9 TV models are exactly 16:9. Also, there are a lot of convergence, overscan, vertical and horizontal height adjustements made at the factory, these are all basically analog and can vary from one TV to the next. The set in question may be slightly out of alignment, causing the bars to appear at the top and bottom. I suspect that your video is just fine, it's just that the two different TVs are displaying it somewhat differently. This is perfectly normal and I wouldn't worry about it.

Also, remember to render your videos at 720x360. It should eliminate any black bars you encounter, if that was the problem.

I'm not sure why I would want to render at 720x360.
The black bars i'm refering to is viewed on the vegas preview window
and on my final DVD played on a set top DVD player.
Now bear in mind. I have made other 16x9 videos using this
same setup without any black bars showing. There must be some switch not set
right on this project, but I can not find it. I have another project using the same
imported 16x9 avi DV file and it works fine?????
Thanks,
Steve

I think I found the problem....
I must of changed the aspect ratio using the track motion feature
to 16x9 without realizing it. It's odd though... I don't see the small
dot (on the time line) to click on to delete the change.

If I select default within track motion, the video returns back to normal.

That brings up the question when working on a 16x9 anamorphic video(both project and media selected for 16x9):
When you set the whole video to 16x9 within track motion, does it resample the video
for 16x9 aspect ratio within your 16x9 project? This might explain why I was seeing
small black bars within my 16x9 preview window.
thanks, steve
