1x Burn Speed - how to?

DGrob wrote on 1/18/2004, 9:24 AM
As I understand it from Spot's book, best quality burn for reproduction is at 1x. My Precision M60 has an NEC DVD/CD 4x burner. When I open the pulldown menu to burn a "Verbatim +R or +RW 2.4" media, I only have the 2.4x option for burn speed.

Do I change something in DVDA to achieve the 1x burn, or go to Device Manager and select 1x from the CD tab currently set at "max?"

Thanks all. DGrob

Good question. I can't answer it, but can't burn at 1x either on my pioneer 104. Apparently there's something about the burner burning at the speed its firmware is indicating for the media rather than the speed I indicate. Perhaps you are having a similar problem.
Can someone please help us burn at 1x!!!

Many burner can only burn +R media at 2.4 or higher.
Check your burner docs.
For example, my Pioneer DVR-106D will burn:
-R at 1,2 or 4
-RW at 1 or 2
+R at 2.4 or 4
+RW at 2.4

In most cases your burning s/w will show only applicable speeds, that are supported by the burner and the media.

Frankly, i see no reason to burn at a speed < to 2.4 with DVD+R. Tried many, many brands on HP 200i and LG 4042 and never had problems.

I think I get it. I'll go about my business completely happy with my 2.4x burns until I work up the courage to explore this 8x stuff. :-)

Why? Spot knows what he's talking about. Burning at 1X can make a difference, but it only really counts if you're producing DVDs for clients. If you're sole purpose for burning DVDs is to watch on your DVD player, by all means use the cheapest and fastest medium / speed possible.

On the other hand, if you don't know what player the disc will be placed in, don't take your chances. You want the most compatibility possible.

Back to the topic, I've never been able to burn at 1X in Architect with 2X media with my Pioneer A04, even though its listed in the dropdown menu. However, I can burn at 1X using the same media in DVDIT PE 2.5. That leads me to believe there's a bug in Architect.
