This contest seems to have less intrest than the last one. Maybe the voting and point system has changed but still seems to be less involvement.

I've come to the conclusion that video folks are scared of audio, overall. I'm not sure why. But indeed, this contest is the least active one we've had. It's a shame, because it's got a couple great prizes! It does make it easier on the folks who've submitted though, doesn't it? :-)

ok = since no competition (and i think this one is open to people living in Canada for the first time) , i might enter ! : )

I went for a more "conservative" approach but the "higher-energy" entries seem to be dominating. There certainly aren't many votes, are there?

I assume Spot posted it on the audio side as well.

Spot|DSE wrote on 6/7/2005, 9:30 PM
Actually, I didn't post it on the audio side. I quit visiting there a while back, and felt weird about posting for the contest since I don't contribute much there. Feel free to post!
goshep wrote on 6/7/2005, 9:43 PM
They seem friendly enough over there. I'll pay them a visit and try to drum up some more entries/votes. Since you're up past your bedtime Spot....one of your preview links for "Now Hear This " is/was dead. "Preview 2"

i heard they have some strange rites and secret finger signs you have to accrue before your "in"

The first rule of the Vegas Audio Forum is that you do not talk about video.

The second rule of the Vegas Audio Forum is that you do not talk about video.

Hey, if they wanna do it in Sound Forge or ACID, that's all the better, it's not just for Vegas users that do video.
You're welcome to post this in the audio forum I quit hanging out there a few years ago because I got tired of the constant negative posts from a couple guys. Maybe I should start spending more time there. [edit 2-added back for Ben]
[edit] In fact, there are several folks from various forums that I'm sure aren't using Vegas, but rather using Sound Forge, and maybe other apps.

And the community is all the worse for the person that you speak of not being there.

"There was a user over there at one time that liked to be pretty negative about most everything, especially video."

That's strange because if you're referring to the same person that I think you are, I never saw them once speak negative about the video side. Infact I saw posts where they embraced the video side of vegas, because it helped further support the audio users. I only really read negative posts when Vegas dropped the ball on the audio users with the recent release. I don't post much, but I sure did a lot of reading and found their information quite useful. Infact now, the audio community discussions seem pretty much dead without them. Could you refer us to some of those negative posts about the video side that you're referring too?
goshep wrote on 6/8/2005, 4:11 PM
I hope I didn't open a can-o-worms. I simply suggested the link be posted elsewhere....sheesh.

Back to the contest...there are a few new additions. "Censorship" is pretty darn funny.

Absolutely Alex - I completely concur.

Spot, sorry to say you're way off the mark here. Whether you liked the guy or got with him or not is frankly neither here nor there, and irrelavant. The fact is, he contributed HEAPS to the audio forum and was totally a huge advocate of the software. Not just here, on many other audio forums all over the net.

As Alex says, and as you very well know, many of us are <rightly> angry and disappointed at the direction the software appears to be going in. Of course also bear in mind we were assured time and time again by Sony Media Software employee, on these forums, that the audio side was not being ignored. Simply adding VST support, many years after the techonology has been available, is little more than an insult to Vegas' loyal audio users. And there's a myriad of other things we've also got very good reason to be pissed off about; bugs, broken mixer routing, essential DAW features missing, etc. I think you get my drift.

You're welcome and WOW, I just noticed you've pulled into second place...NICE!!!

I think the audio only/sky's-the-limit nature of this contest makes it a great opportunity for people who are relatively new to editing (like moi.)

More, more, more entries!!

I'm like "wow" also - took the kids swimming and came back and saw that and nearly choked! Thanks everyone - guess I shouldnt get any hopes up yet though, still over a week to go and anything can happen!

I downloaded the clip and tried to come up with something a few times and had a lot of trouble. I deleted what I did and gave up only to try it with the same results a second time. It is probably due to my lack of knowledge on the audio side. But, in my defense, I started out doing editing for audio with cakewalk back in the day (6 years ago is a long time for a 28 year old!). Anyway, when I started experimenting with video it came easy and aesthetically pleasing results came quickly. Whenever I mess around with audio it is like pulling teeth, or rather having a tooth pulled. My original idea for the contest might have been overzealous...I wanted to take a few of the words and alter them into a note. Use that note in an acid style to make a base line and different rhythms to form a techno style song. That seemed too hard with the audio tools in vegas. Also, I didn't like the fact that everytime I altered a section of the audio clip that it had to completely render a new clip and I lost the cut section that was altered. It would have been nice to have it render the alteration out to a new clip and show the original clip with the alteration data. That way someone could see exactly how I altered a sound to create a new one. With the current structure any altered sounds were new clips that could have come from a data base. How was anyone to know that I didn't drop in sounds from my hard drive and compose a song that way, never even touching anything from the contest's provided audio clip?

I gues my point is that vegas seems to be better at doing video creativity projects and video is just easier to do. Sorry for the long post to just say that, but I wanted you to see my logic and train of though.
thanks,
Carson

Well, I thought I'd give this audio contest a try and submitted my piece...so check it out when you have the chance.

It's called "CNN - Tap The Tragedy" VASST Audio Contest

It ended up becoming a kind of audio "statement" of sorts based upon how I edited the wording and put it back together. I wasn't intending it to come out this way, but the piece began to take a life on of its' own once I started editing in Vegas. In addition, the voice-over has actually been placed to match the beat of the acid loops I used at 132bpm.

Only a few days left and there have been around 5 or more new entries in the last couple of days.......check 'em out

Nice to see it has picked up a bit of steam compared to how it started out.
