2 questions about nested vegs

I did try the manual first....

1. I have a project ("MasterProject") in which I have I dragged a .veg file from a "SubProject" (which is a multi-cam project with multiple video tracks) onto the timeline, and then save Master Project, and close it. Then I open SubProject and make some changes (for example, change some of the camera cuts), such that its overall length and its start and end time on the timeline, is unchanged, and save it, and close it.

Will the changes I made to SubProject show up in MasterProject next time I open it? Or do I have to right click on the SubProject veg in MasterProject for changes made to SubProject to carry over?

2. Will markers (M) I created in SubProject before I dragged it into MasterProject show up in DVDA if I render MasterProject to MPEG-2 using the "Save project markers in media file" option, or only the markers I create in MasterProject?

I've used Nesting quite a bit. Whatever I do in the SUb Project and "Save" gets carried into the Main Project. What happens is a proxy file of the "SubProj" gets created and this IS what you see in the main project.

You do realise you can Edit the nested project: "SubProj.veg" : from within the MainProject - yeah? All you need to do is Right click on that "SubProj and select "Edit . .. " from the Pop-up menu. What happens then is that another instances of Vegas is fired-up and you get your chance to edit. You don't need to close the main project at all, to edit the sub project.

I noticed that the first time I dragged SubProj into MainProj, a proxy file was built. I guess Vegas can tell if SubProj was changed, and if so, rebuilds the proxy the next time MainProj is opened?

Have always loved the concept of nested veg files, but I had a bad experience with early versions - not the least because I was using firewire outboard drives, and their mounted letters would change.

Now am firmly in with fixed SATA drives. Do your projects...
A. take very long to load every time you boot?
B. crash often?

Would you undertake a project with let's say a finish time of 75 minutes and 40 or 50 sub veg projects?

In XP, this problem can be avoided by going into control panel -> computer management -> disk management, and assigning a unique drive letter to each removable drive. When the drive is reconnected after being removed, XP will recognize the drive and give it the letter you assigned to it. (You have to give each removable drive a different letter for this to work).

I've had no problems with externals having a letter assigned and remaining with them.

If "K" is removed and I plug in "L" - "L" shows up, not "K". If I should then plug in "K" then "K" shows up. Even my USB Pendrive, when plugged into that computer, gets religiously assigned to the letter "M"!

I know you use nested veg files a lot...
again - do they crash?
do they take a long time to load every time you restart your computer?
I'm thinking about using them on long form project with about 30-60 nested veg files.
waddya think?

I also use nested veg's a lot and they do not crash for me.

I cannot say that I've used 30 to 60 of them. I think I maxed out at something like 15.

They've worked very well for me. Excellent for keeping elaborate sections undisturbed.

That depends what you have going on in the subprojects. Once the proxy file is rendered, if they are undisturbed, it does not take long to load the rendered proxy files. Not at all.

On projects I have done (without DVDA), the markers do carry over into the final rendered DV file with the save markers option set to true. So, if they're in the DV file they should carry over to DVDA.

Someting to keep in mind, if you do something to change the duration of the subproject, including make it longer/shorter, the master project will reflect the changes, but you will have to adjust the timeline duration of the subproject on the timeline of the master project. Not a big deal to do, but it has to be done.
