Saving tape would depend on the project. If it's a client's project, I'd save the tapes or offer to give the tapes to the client. We keep tapes forever, but we also keep projects on drives forever too. Keep your tapes with the "door" side down. (stored vertically, not horizontally)
Save those old files off to a hard drive, or just erase them if you feel you'll never need them again.
Vegas shouldn't be losing speed, unless you've got very limited HDD space and your entire computer is hurting a bit due to the full drives.

"Gods . ." hmm ... ?

Well, what I do is:

1/- Keep ALL original tapes forever. Store vertically

2/- Print off of 3 tapes I keep two, Client gets one PLUS the format they wanted: DVD, Files etc etc . .

3/- Project files.

4/- After 6 months delete everything else

Now, the reasoning behind this is I DO get the client to sign off that the job has been accepted AND finished - PERIOD! SHOULD the client wish to re-edit the project after the agreed project deletion period then that is a new job and requires a new job number, a new job creation but I do have the original tapes.

This is how I work. Others with a greater need to keep media and will have a more intricate and comprehensive approach than I.

Recently I did have to re-edit some text as a building had a 9 month delay and completion launch date. That was straightforward. However WITHOUT the approach I described above I would have looked very unprofessional. And yes, they were happy to pay for the re-edit and recognised the value of working with me.

It is SOLUTIONS good clients want! Be lead by creating and retaining good clients. Being clear and have them understand to what lengths you go to - and have them sign off on that agreement - of course clients are never ever unreasonable? Are they? Bless! . ..

Grazie

To clean out the Media Manager of old off-line media you must go into Media Manager Options on the Media Library tab and press the Update button to update the status of all of your media. Then do an Advanced Query where Offline=true to find all of the off-line media. Finally, use Ctrl+A to select all of the media and delete it (Del). I cover this procedure in the VASST Absolute Training for Vegas+DVD, Vol. 7, Media Manager Demystified. On the page in my link is a link to short sample on handling off-line media.
