Bring 'em in as 24-bit and send 'em out as 24-bit and everything will
be fine. The sound card that you use to transfer the data has a
driver that wants to see everything at 24-bit anyway. The least
significant 4 bits are ignored when it goes to tape.

The only other thing you might want to consider is to dither to 20
bits when writing back to tape. I believe the Waves Plugin has the
option to dither to selected bit depths. You could apply this to the
main bus in Vegas.
