Anyone know of any deals better than 200.00 for 250 gig drives? We're taking all of our 100 gig drives out of our server and replacing them with 250's, and it adds up really quick.
Within the last monty, at, I believe Best Buy, but it may have been CompUSA (that great Mexican Company) 250GB HDs were $160. This sort of pricing is cyclical. It should be back very soon.
SPOT, go with newegg; you cant beat the fast shipping and deals on the HD's. The 250 GB Western Digitals are great, and the OEM price from newegg, along witht he customer service, cant be beat in my opinion. I have built many systems from parts purchased from newegg.com. The other great thing about this online dealer is the customer reviews on all the products they carry. Its such a great read to see what experience others have had before you buy.
Best deal at www.pricewatch.com right now is $138. Actually that link is out of stock; best name brand appears to be here. Personally, I troll the Sunday newspaper specials. It seems like every other week has a great deal that beats anything online
I just picked up another 200gig Hitachi drive yesterday at CompUSA for $80. It was $179 with an "instant" $20 rebate and an $80 mail-in rebate.
I used to prefer Western Digital drives but started using the Hitachi drives about six months ago. I now have eight of the Deskstar 7K series drives, I have two 200's, four 250's and two 400's and I like them a lot. For those of you that don't know, Hitachi bought IBM's hard drive division a couple of years ago and their drives are quite "state of the art."
Don't forget that IBM's Deskstars acquired, with good reason, the nickname "Deathstar". IBM even posted a warning that they were not designed to be run more than 8 hours a day. Hope Hitachi successfully addressed the problems.
Yes, I was aware of the issue with the old 75GXP drives and, yes, Hitachi has dealt with it. I run my drives 24 hours a day and "pound the blazes" out of them. Storagereview.com likes the new Hitachi drives quite a bit and the 400 gig version is currently on the top of their "leaderboard."
almost all HD manufactures went to a one year warrenty a while back. Seagate now offers a 5 year warrenty. You can still find WD drives with 3 years warrenty, they are manufactured for certain distributors in certain applications.
WD's have a 1 year warranty, Hitachi's have a 3 year warranty. WD will sell you an "extended" 3 year warranty by going to their web site and paying an extra $14.95 per drive.
M:y last WD drive came with the now industry standard 1 year only warranty. However, there was a card in the box that offerred an extention of that warranty to a total of 3 years for $14.95 mailed directly to WD.
Several companies are going on the cheap and then selling their own extended warranties. They vary by company and by product within the company.
Right now you're still going to be paying a premium the extra capacity of a 250GB drive over a 200GB drive. 1TB will cost $640 (4 250's) vs. $500 (5 200's).
If that's the case, then I guess I lucked out. I bought a Hitachi Deststar 7K250 series 200 gig drive from CompUSA yesterday and it says "3 year warranty" right on the box.
GO TO WWW.PRICEWATCH.COM !!!!!!!!
Seek and you will find it my son. It's the best price you'll probably find. I found 200 GB USB External for just about $120.00 or so. I can't imagine that you will have any trouble finding internal 250's for much more than that. Just looked now and found them for $138.00 7200 rpm 250GB with 8MB Buffer ATA100 drive, and you may be able to get a better deal if you talk to them, depending on quantity.
