3.5 mm mic cable

Hi, I just received an Azden SGM-X shotgun mic. The cable it came with is too short (I'd like to extend it to a mic stand), and I'm having a little bit of trouble cable-wise. The mic connects to the camera via a 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm cable.

I own two longer 3.5mm-3.5mm cables, however when I use these to connect the mic, the audio only comes out through one channel and is somewhat distorted. The included cable of course works fine. So basically what I'm asking is if there is a certain type of cable I need to buy? The ones I have that don't work are just 3.5 mm male to 3.5 mm male stereo cables.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot!

In your owner's manual, it shows the wiring, and you'll either need a new one from Azden, or you'll need to build your own matched to the wiring shown in the book.
(just got your mail as well)
A standard 3.5 mm TRS should work, but if you're not using a TRS, it would only give you one channel, and likely lots of RF if it's a long cable.

Thanks for the reply.

There's nothing in the manual about the wiring, all it says is that it's a 3.5 mm mini-plug- 3.5 mm mini plug.

What is a TRS? I was looking around and is there any chance that just extending the included cable with something like THIS
would work?

Thanks again.

That cable should work fine, though you'll have to also use the cable that came with the mic to plug into it.

TRS is "Tip Ring Sleeve" and indicates a plug with three conductors for stereo instead of two for mono. If you look at the plug on the cable that came with the mic you'll see it's divided into three sections, a tip, a ring just below the tip, and a sleeve. The other cable you were trying to use has only one division between two parts.

Thanks for replying. The weird thing is that the cables I was trying that weren't working looked exactly like the cable included with the mic (with the 3 sections.)

So I guess I'll just get that connector/extender cable and plug that into the cable included with the mic.
