Doesn't this work by simply placing a 2D layer under your 3D layers? As long as the underlying layer is set to 2D, I don't think it will intersect.

EDIT: Alright I guess it isn't that simple. You have to make at least one of the 3D layers on top of your 2D background a compositing child. That seems to do it.
