306MB wav file - no sound

I just rendered the audio portion of my project using the .wav settings in advanced render. MS produced a 306MB wav file that has absolutely no sound in it. I even opened a blank MS project, imported the wav file, dragged it to the voice track and the stereo tracks are flat lines. Windows says this is a 16bit, 48KHz PCM stereo file at 1536 kbps. I've been using MS since version 2 of Video Factory so I know a little about how to render just audio. I read somewhere that the whole timeline has to be displayed or MS won't render audio completely. I can't believe that to be the case.

Given my other experiences with audio problems in MS4 (which I've never had before), I think Sony has a serious bug they need to fix.

An update - I just tried the trick of viewing the entire timeline before rendering the audio and this time it worked. But I don't know if it was because I re-invoked MS or whether this time it just 'worked'. At any rate, there should be no reason to have to view the entire time line in order for your project to get rendered correctly.
