32 bit & 64 bit h.264 codec the same file. AVI?

I have been reading this forum and other sources on the net trying to figure out how to get my MS 12 to open AVI files. I followed the widely recommended suggestion of installing the h.264 codecs from sourceforge. Here's the issue - I installed what I thought was the 64 bit version and still I get and error message and MS is unable to open AVI files. So some say I need both version on my computer, but when I try to download the 32 bit version it is actually the same file as the 64 bit. Has anyone else run into this?

If you are talking about the x264vfw codec, the download options may seem a bit confusing, however there are two distinct versions.

I have downloaded both files from soundforge and my computer sees them as the same. In fact on the soundforge site both files are the same despite their different names. Is there another place I can find these codecs? I really need to be able to open avi files in movie studio.

AVI files can contain any of HUNDREDS of codecs. h264 is only one of them.

You haven't demonstrated that yours are indeed h264, the specific codec that x264vfw opens.
Please post the complete file details using MediaInfo, also a free download from Sourceforge.

Also for your information, x264vfw_38_2274bm_36885.exe is a 1.1MB download, with an MD5 checksum 7b9afb75c6b9a45521b461970bd93639.
On the other hand, x264vfw64_38_2274bm_36885.exe is a 1.2MB download, with an MD5 checksum of e6a18a77bddd08e4a33ac870bff3537e.

That means they are different executables, just like they have always been! Please be sure of your facts before making such statements in the future. That assumes you are actually working with h264/AVI, of which I remain unconvinced. I've worked with that codec for years. If your files are actually MJPEG, or Divx/Xvid, MPEG-2 in an AVI wrapper, or whatever, we can help you with that, too. But we need to know the real facts first . . .

I had used that codec from that site previously that's why I was so confused about what was happening. I guess somehow I must have kept downloading the same file over and over thinking it was two different ones. The information you provided about the file size helped me find what I was looking for and all is working now. Thank you
