Are you capturing DV via 1394? If so, it should only be capturing 720x480. 4:3 or 16:9 is just a difference in pixel aspect ratio.

Help us understand how you're capturing so we can help.

I'm capturing analog through 1394, through a break-out box and an All-in-Wonder. I'm pretty sure I've tried having the project settings at 720 and 640, but it always captures at 320 x 480. I'll keep trying though.

Can you tell us how you've got all this wired up? It would seem that if you're capturing analog through an All-In-Wonder card then you're probably not using 1394. If you're using 1394 and an external converter box, then you're probably not going through the All-In-Wonder card.

The real reason this concerns me is that if you reall are capturing through a 1394 firewire port then you shouldn't have any access to frame size settings at all. There shouldn't be any way for you to get anything BUT 720x480 (at least if you're in NTSC land).

It sounds like the All-in-wonder is not sampling the horizontal at full frequency, so it's only giving you 320 pixels. It is sampling all lines, which is why you're getting 480. The pixel aspect ratio must be about 2.0 (pixels are twice as wide as they are tall).

This probably has nothing to do with the source being letterboxed.

If you bring these clips into Vegas and set the media's pixel aspect ratio to 2.0, you'll be able to use them.

If you want more resolution (who wouldn't?) you should continue to look into how to set the All-in-wonder to capture at a higher resolution.

I just got an 8500DV - this happens if you capture analog with the 'VdWWDM32.dll' (in sfvidcap's video menu).

You can download capture drivers from ATI's site which give you an 'ATI Rage Theater Video Capture' option in sfvidcap, and is quite flexible on what resolutions you can capture at, all the way to full 720x480 (although the preview window shows it as vertically letterboxed, it captures full-frame)

You can get it from http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver.html

The 6.13 driver (as of this writing) can be gotten at http://mirror.ati.com/support/drivers/misc/wdmcap613106125v5.html

Be warned, it captures in 'Microsoft YUV' format, at roughly 1.2GB/minute (70GB/hr)
