3D metadata?

3d87c4 wrote on 4/2/2017, 8:57 PM

YouTube has just added this note below the 3D checkbox:

The 3D checkbox will be soon deprecated. Please refer to this Help Center article. for instructions how to specify metadata for uploading 3D files.

Here's a link to the article:

https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/7278886?hl=en

It seems to imply that Sony Vegas already adds the needed metadata, but I just ran my latest 3D video (edited in Vegas 14, build 244) through the MediaInfo utility and don't see anything 3D related.

Is there something more I should be doing when I render 3D videos?

Did a little reading in the Vegas help file section Rendering a Stereoscopic 3D project. It says that the Sony AVC template "will will create a single AVC/H.264 file with SEI frame packing arrangement metadata to indicate stereoscopic 3D playback" .

Does this mean the MainConcept AVC template I've been using doesn't?

The MediaInfo file above was created using MainConcept AVC. I re-rendered the same project using Sony AVC and here is the resulting MediaInfo report. I'm still not recognizing anything confirming the 3D metadata is there:

Upload video directly to YouTube using Vegas pro. File > Share Online > Upload to YouTube. Done ... it detects 3D metadata automatically

3d87c4 wrote on 8/20/2018, 2:01 AM

Ooops, I forgot to follow up on the original post, sorry. Adding frame-packing=3 was the solution back when YT dropped the 3D check box.

ffmpeg -i input_file.mkv -vcodec libx264 -x264opts "frame-packing=3" output_file.mp4

I have also heard YT is recognizing 3D now, without any additional metadata, but continue to add frame-packing=3 anyway.

A couple more observations...this may have changed, but I did some experiments last December and found:

It appears YouTube is only supporting side-by-side full videos now (with metadata, at the time I experimented).

Top/bottom full, with appropriate metadata' were not displayed as 3D by YouTube when I did the experiment.

I don't think YouTube is supporting side-by-side, or top/bottom half formats anymore...but don't have examples to share.

Here are my test videos from December:

Top/Bottom without metadata:

Top/Bottom with metadata (frame-packing=4):

Side-by-side full without metadata:

Side-by-side full with metadata (frame-packing=3)

I have been using x264VFW to render side-by-side full videos and adding the metadata in the x264 options box:

Rendering each eye to separate files and combining them into 3D, with the metadata, using FFMPEG is also an option.

Thank you.

When YouTube stopped supporting flash, in favor of html5, all desktop viewing options were lost---it's 2D or anaglyph only, now.

now my question is , if vegas pro is unable to put metadata then why i use it for 3d editing ? while studio or other softwares is much cheaper then vegas pro.

i used x264vfw but it compress much much the video that dead the quality or may be i am not friendly to set , if you know the good setting option then give me too.

You can see my x264VFW settings in the image I posted above. For conventional, GoPro, 3D I'm rendering 1080P, side-by-side Full, with project set to "Best" video qualit

I keep finding the

ffmpeg -i input_file.mkv -vcodec libx264 -x264opts "frame-packing=3" output_file.mp4

suggestion on many forums online, but it isn't doing the trick. The injector works well for 360vr but I'm just trying to do regular old fashioned 1920x1080 and the injector won't do that. Any other suggestions?

Robert Johnston wrote on 12/9/2018, 12:24 PM

When you render using Sony AVC, you need to change the Stereoscopic 3D" option in the Render As custom settings from "Use project settings" to "Side-by-Side Half." "Side-by-side (half) is the only one I've used. When you keep "Use project settings," the necessary information needed by YouTube is not included in the file, and your video will not be recognized as 3D(no matter how long you wait after uploading it). When you explicitly state the 3D side-by-side (half) format in the Render As custom settings, the necessary information is included in the file. And just because YouTube says your video is ready for viewing doesn't mean it is ready for 3D viewing. Sometimes I've had to wait another 5 to 10 minutes after the "ready for viewing" notice before it was ready for 3D viewing, and that was with a 5 second video.

AFAIK: YT is only accepting side-by-side full, with the frame-packing=3 metadata since the 3D button was deprecated.

I successfully published a half-width SBS 3D video to YouTube in January 2018. I transcoded it with ffmpeg, in order to include the metadata string including "frame-packing=3" and other parameters.

But today I've successfully published another half-width SBS 3D video to YouTube that I produced in Vegas, with the correct metadata automatically included. I used Robert Johnston's directions posted above. No transcoding needed!

I edited and rendered the video in Movie Studio Platinum version 13.0. So it's not necessary to have Vegas Pro to render a 3D video with the necessary metadata -- the less expensive versions of Vegas will do it too. Just make sure to follow Robert's directions.

I used the Sony AVC template for my video. I'm curious to know if this would also work with the MainConcept AVC template. Maybe I'll try it at some point.
