3rd time to reinstall 8.1

This is getting frustrating. This is now the 3rd time I've had to reinstall 8.1. I am running vista64 with 8gig ram on a quad-core box. I intall 8.1 and everything works fine, but after a few days, 8.1 sill stop recognizing certin types of files, maily mpeg (mp3 and mpeg2). Won't load projects that it created the day before, complaining that it can't find the media files, yet they are right there. When you try to drag the media files to the timeline, all you get is the pointer with the circle and slash. When I reinstall 8.1, everything goes back to normal.

Is anyone else having this problem? I thought I read the other day about someone having a problem that was similar but not exactly the same.

Anyone??

Michael

Update: I installed 8.1, everything worked fine. Did some editing of clips. Exited 8.1, forgot to do one cut so I went right back in, and bam! Failed to load the project because of the mpg files. This is frustrating. So I only get to use it once per install? (Yes, I purchased a license and re-register every time I reload).

I just my copy of Vista 64-bit in the mail today. Now I have to figure out which boot manager to use so that I can dual boot XP 32-bit along with the Vista OS. I have used GRUB several times with Linux installs on Windows machines, but never a Windows-only boot manager.

Once I get that down, then I am going to install Vista 64 and then version 8.1. I also ordered 4gb of new ram (to make 8gb), but mistakenly ordered only 2gb! I ordered 2x1024, not 2x2048... Man I hate it when I screw up like that...Sheesh. I was half tempted to just install it and live with 6gb (it only cost $20 on TigerDirect!), but I figure I'd just have to buy more later if I wanted to get to 8gb. May as well do it only once.

Sounds like the problem I had. See if the workaround helps you out.:

Thanks Xander. Turning off the association check at startup seems to have stopped it! Finally!
