I am new to Sony's DVD architect software. When I attempt to preview, even a new project just started and hit preview, I get the following error:

PREVIEW FAILED
Error code: 0x800404b0

Anyone have any ideas?

System info:
Dell Precision 450
Dual Xeon 2.4
Windows XP sp2

Purchased Movie Studio + DVD Platinum this week,

Go here: http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/download/step1.asp?catid=2

And select the correct update for the version you have. Not sayng that will fix it for certain, but it certainly won't hurt if you've not done this already.

Thanks... should have indicated I did that already... any other ideas.

I burned a dvd this AM and that is working. It's just a real pain in that I cannot preview it on the computer using the emulator.

I installed the 4.0 (non-Studio) version in hopes that might help me see if it was the Studio version with the issue. I cannot view in either package pressing the preview button or using the shuttle controls in the Timeline Window... very frustrating. Perhaps I need to swap to another dvd mastering package.

I am still getting preview error, but different/more info:

MESSAGE IS:
An error occurred while starting playback.
A device is not available.

DETAILS ARE:
The playback device does not support the current output format.
The playback device does not exist.

I had a similar message because of the settings of my external sound card (was set to 44 khz instead of the 48 khz required) . What kind of "preview devices" are you using?

I have a firewire out to a Canopus ADVC110 then out via video composite and AV jacks to a Panasonic VHS in and then to a old Emerson 13" TV via coax connection.

I also have three 19" Acer LCD panels connected to the computer. Two are fed by VGA via a NVIDIA Quadro FX 500 (vga and DVI w/VGA adapter). The other fed by an ATI Expert 128 via VGA.

My audio is an older set of Altec Lansing speakers with a subwoofer connected via USB. (Based on your situation maybe this is the source of the problem?)

I don't think the ADVC is the problem. Could be your USB audio set-up. Can you preview audio in Movie Studio? Can you preview in DVDA with USB audio disconnected? What are the settings for your audio hardware?

I was wrong. My audio is using the audio out form the computer so it is not USB. I have no idea how to "disconnect" it beyond unplugging that. But it should not matter since it's in audio out. You think?
