4:3 media always letterboxed - DVDA2

I'm tearing out my hair ... my 4:3 media always come out letterboxed, so everyone's short and fat.
Video captured with Pinnacle DC2000 into mp2 (PAL 720x576) in 4:3, the prepared and inserted into DVDA2. However, all plays and previews are horizontally stretched, and I can't for the life of me find a way of ensuring the correct 4:3 aspect ratio is maintained.
I've recompressed and cut a few DVDs (7 hour runs each time), and each time I get letterboxed video with short fat people.
Any suggestions (other than growth hormones and a strict diet)?

Sorry if this is a basic question, but is your DVDA project set to NTSC or PAL (Check File > Properties). By default, everything in DVDA is geared toward American standards. You can change this in the future by going to File > New, changing your settings for PAL, and checking the box that says "Start all new projects with these settings."

Yes, it's set to PAL at every possible place, with PAL 720x576 in all other areas.
When the mp2 file was brought into DVDA it had to be prepared, and I selected MainConcept-2. I'm going to redo the whole thing and prep the video file with MainConcept-1.

Problem solved -- it seems that DVDA2 prepared the media using the wrong codec. I deleted the .sfvx "prep" file created by DVDA2 and then opened the project again. The system took a long time to automatically recreate the sfvx file and when it did the letterbox problem disappeared.
