4K GPU rendering problem with pictures.

LISOLN wrote on 3/28/2023, 2:03 AM

I have edited a documentary movie with a few map pictures(jpg) and footage in 4K. In the beginning of my movie I have still pictures (and credit roll text as intro). The rest of my movie is H.264 - 4K. I have subtitles where my comments are together with Smartsound music on most of my movie, also in the beginning of the movie.

Almost everything works perfect, with one major problem. When GPU-rendering with MAGIX AVC/AAC MP4 format (3840x2160 - NV Encoder both VBR and CBR), parts of the MP4 movie is messed up. This happens only in the first few minutes of my movie where the still pictures are, and the still pictures ( jpg ) and text are destoyed. My comments and Smartsound music are not affected. The rest of the movie with movie footage/text is normal. Tried the MP4-file on PC with VLC and WMP and on 4K TV. The text is ok when muting the picture track . My movie is 100% ok in preview(also on external monitor).

Then, when I use CPU-rendering in 4K, the whole movie is OK.

I have resized the pictures to 3840x2160 and also used pictures snapped from my movie. I have also tried TIFF format, and the same occurs here. It also happens when GPU - rendering som other JPG-pictures in 4K with, then with only one video track on my timeline.

When rendering in HD(1920x1080) everything is OK, both CPU and GPU-rendering. I have never seen this problem in earlier versions( I have worked with Vegas since version 9). There is a problem here when I am GPU-rendering pictures in 4K, and I don't understand why. So far I've used a lot of hours rendering in different ways, but nothing seems to help GPU-rendering pictures / 4K.

Summary:

GPU/CPU - rendering in HD (1920x1080) is OK all over.

CPU - rendering in 4K is ok all over.

GPU - rendering in 4K: Areas with still pictures and text together the video are destroyed. The rest, with 4K movie footage + subtitles in combination with 4K movie, are ok.

GPU: Asus RTX 4070 Ti Tuf gaming OC 12 Gb

Mem: G.skill Ripjaws SS DDR5-5600 BK C36 DC - 32 gb

Windows 11 Home(latest ver.) on WD Black SN850X PCIe NVME 1Tb

Saving videos on WD Black SN850X PCIe NVME 2Tb

Power: Corsair RM 850x v3

Cooler: be quiet dark rock Pro4

I am using Vegas Pro 20 (build 370) clean install on my computer + printer software and Smartsound. Nothing else. All drivers are updated.

Does anyone have an idea why this picture/text problem is here? Is this related to Vegas Pro 20, Asus Rtx 4070 Ti or me?

@LISOLN To rule out your NVIDEA GPU issue or NVIDEA driver issue, try rendering in Intel GPU mode (using your internal GPU of the processor). Change this in preferences first, then select QSV rendering.

I have tried this, and the movie was 100% ok. Rendered the movie without any GPU at all in my computer. This problem occured after installing new GPU and GPU-rendering. The whole movie is OK with QSV rendering.

This has been brought up a huge amount of times since VP20 release from people using VP20, but you can look back in forum messages and see it's existed since VP15. The still picture problem is the giveaway, it's a MagixAVC/HEVC hardware encoding bug. You can use voukoder to use hardware encoding without the corrupted encoding.

The only problem with Voukoder is synchronization, if memory is correct audio/video syncs perfectly when GPU decoder on, but if you are one that chooses not to use GPU decoding it is out of sync by 1 or 2 frames. This was a complaint/problem a while ago, that most likely still exists

I understand. Thank you for this answer. Your answer explains for me what to do in the future, and until this bug is fixed. I was a bit worried about my new homebuild PC, but now I can relax. 😊

Do you see this defect with the VP 20 sample project? It had glitches with my laptop and NVIDIA GPU but not desktop NVIDIA GPU:

It would also be great to see how your system compares for speed.

NVENC with Voukoder (plugin that works in VEGAS) works okay as far as I can tell and is somewhat faster.

I am a bit busy just now. Will try this within 5-6 hours and give you a reply.

@LISOLN I had a quick try with one minute of still picture with some audio and text added, but did not see an issue. maybe Nvidea 40 series driver related? Does the Asus RTX 4070 Ti Tuf gaming OC 12 GB you have, have a dual BIOS (one silent, one overclock)? If so, if you are running OC, try running silent. I have my Asus RTX 3090 running slower in silent mode (HW switch on the video card).

@bitman This comes up all the time, the bitrate seems to get stuck low after a picture is introduced when using MagixAVC/HEVC hardware encoding. Here's an example that I"ve shown before

This is MagixAVC Software encode as comparison, and how the hardware encode should look. In this example the cat photo disappears for much of the time with the hardware encode, but with a different photo and video, the picture may stay but with corrupt video between picture and video.

I have tried render with my computer and the VP 20 project. Everything looks ok both with GPU and CPU encoding. The rendering time with GPu was 1m 23s, and CPU 6m 08s. I don't knoe if my computer is optimized enough or not.

I used my computer without GPU for about two weeks. No problem with Intels prosessor graphics and 4K rendering.I was dissapointed when installing the new GPU and rendering pictures in 4K. For me this seems to be a problem with either Vegas Pro or ASUS 4070 TI, or in a combination with these.

I have not installed Voukoder plugin yet, will do it soon.

Tried silent mode and performance mode on my GPU. Rendered pictures still destroyed.

Your NVENC time seems fine. Your CPU only (Mainconcept) time is about 3x slower than it should be. Maybe watch temperatures with a tool like HWINfo64 and see if you are throttling, hitting wattage limits, etc.

It's good you didn't see any glitches though.
