This is what one of the industry gurus/insiders stated on 8/8/04, before the Sony FX1 announcement. He was dead on in his prediction; all tests, including my own observations, indicate that the guy was 100% right about the new Sony HDV camera quality. Read about it in the last post of this thread:

Here's a summary:
The Varicam codec is sub HD resolution ... When the new HDV generation cameras come out ... HDV is going to give Varicam a serious run for its money. I'll bet that HDV is going to put DVCPRO HD out of business.
My comment:
HDV is not putting it out of business but into the $3K range, where it belongs. Panasonic will introduce next year a SD flash card media DVCPRO HD camera for $3K.
