5.1 Mixing and monitoring - confused and need help.

I'm using Vegas with a 6.1 audio (Realtek) on the motherboard with S/PDIF Out into a home theater receiver S/PDIF in that has built in

First, Audio Device choices in Vegas all read just Realtek (no LR, Center, LFE choices) and all I get going to the receiver is a stereo mix. This receiver does not have analog surround inputs :(

I'm guessing Vegas does output 5.1 digitallly to the Realtek and/or the Realtek can't read the 5.1 from Vegas, just reads it as stereo.

So, what's the best solution? I was hoping to use a consumer receiver - I can return the reciever and get another, but I still not convinced I'm going to get the right channels to from the Realtek.

What sound cards allow you to correctly assign L/R/S/C/LFE in the "audio devices" in Vegas? And do they all output those channels only analog or will any output/encode them digitally?

I have my eye on using 5 Klipsch RB15 bookshelfs and sub to get high quality sound for under $1000 as a true pro setup appears to be way beyond my budget.

That Klipsch setup would probably work OK, but you gotta have an ASIO sound card to get all of the channels out of the PC. I think I remember Peter or someone here mentioning that they were looking into (maybe in latest release) turning that feature on - the one that would allow non-ASIO drivers to access the sound channels for multi-channel output. Seems that scenario was way unstable or something.....

If your sound card is not ASIO, which it doesn't appear to be from what I looked up, you will need to find another one. They can be had for as little as $200 - which is what I paid for an M-Audio Delta 410 (musiciansfriend.com). That unit has S/PDIF out it seems too, so it may work for you. I use my receiver's analog ins so i can't give you any advice on whether the S/PDIF out will *truly* work with your receiver.

There's a lot of ASIO cards out there though, just find the one that suits your needs. Stay away from sound blaster though...unless you like headaches! lots of people around here use sb cards and like them - and lots don't! stick to a brand everyone around here likes uniformly. Just search the forums for them....

good luck.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, the Realtek is definetly not ASIO. I shop at Musician's Friend, so I can certainly go that direction.

I did confirm though that I can get analog out via the Real Tek but the center is not coming through...

No, Vegas does not stream a digital AC3 stream.

A small clarification, you will have to use an amp with 5.1 analog imput, trade yours back in.

Will Vegas stream AC3 in preview in a future release? I am able to preview the 5.1 sound through S/PDIF in DVD Architect, but it would be much better if I could preview it in Vegas.

Best Regards
