First, open Project Properties box (File Menu, Properties), and on the Audio Tab set Master Bus Mode: = 5.1 Surround.

Now you will find 5.1 panners in all the mixer channels, and the Master becomes Surround Master.

If you right-click on EACH panner you can select the panning Type - for my purposes I use mono signals and require discrete panning within the soundfield, so I select FILM.

When you double-click on the panner in the mixer channel a larger Pan window pops up - there you just select the little diamond to move the sound where you want it....

You can test the action of each panning Type by simply playing single mono & stereo sounds and finding out what each of the panner modes does...

There's heaps of panning guidance in Vegas Pro's user manual - go to Help / Contents and Index (F1 shortcut) and in the search field type "surround sound panning". Several selections should result (17 in fact in Vegas Pro 16) including '5.1 surround sound panning and mixing' and 'Audio panning modes'.

i know that but where for the dot?

Mixing multi-channel 5:1 is another skill altogether,. 'Basically'..., dialog goes to center channel, music to L/R, S/FX to L/R and surround (depending). Low frequency S/FX, are sent to the sub.. Confirm everything sounds good when down-mixed to mono and stereo .
I have heard more than a few nightmares happening at film festivals and such, so if you are not sure of multi channel mix techniques, hire an experienced pro, or just do with a stereo mi to be safe.

MUSICGUY999, do you have a way to monitor 5.1 mixing? The Dot goes where you want that channel of audio to go. The HELP in Vegas may offer some more information.

Yep! More than a month is plenty time.

You pay me teaching or do study the (old) manual carefully and experiment.

There IS information about how to pan in Vegas Pro's user manual under the '5.1 surround panning and mixing' chapter. Under the 'Panning a track or bus' sub-chapter, there are instructions and images about how to do it. The text includes, "drag the pan point ..." so it does show you what to pan. Where you want to move the pan point to is entirely up to you based entirely on what you are trying to achieve with 5.1 panning.

The following sub-chapter in the user manual addresses keyframing panning.
