i have 5.1 sound blaster extigy. this external sound card capable of dolby digital 5.1 surround sound. i set my vegas sound to 5.1 surround mode and the LFE level showed but no signals. why? please help.
You need to use an audio card that provides 6 analog outputs. I don't believe that the Extigy provides this, but I don't have this hardware.
What driver model in Vegas are you using : ASIO, Wave Classic, Direct Sound Surround Mapper, or Mapper?
If you select the DirectSound Surround Mapper, this should allow the Extigy to expose all of its surround outputs. However, you must first configure Windows to set this up. You have to tell Windows that you have a Surround speaker system. The instructions for this should be included with your Extigy.
i set vegas to Direct Sound Surround Mapper, and i went to Windows control panel to set to surround sound 5.1 speakers. but still doesnt work... why?i think this SB Extigy does come with 6 analog chanel.
this is the spect that i got from the manufacture:
High Definition Audio Quality
High Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) exceeding 100dB using high linearity, low distortion 24-bit converters with resolutions of up to 96kHz
24-bit / 96kHz Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) for various analog inputs
24-bit / 96kHz Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) for 6-channel analog speaker and headphone output
Independent 24-bit Analog-to-Digital Converters for Line and Microphone input controls to provide recording and mixing flexibility
Supports Sony/Philips Digital Interface (SPDIF) format input signal of up to 24-bit / 96kHz quality
Hi Peter,
I disable the internal sound card. Currently my computer is using the external SB Extigy sound card. When I go to Preferences-Audio Devices tab, and on the Audio Device Types I saw the following:
Window Classic Wave Driver
Direct Sound Surround Mapper
Microsoft Sound Mapper
I dont see any ASIO drivers. And when I selected Window Classic Wave Driver, for the following drop down combos I saw:
Default Stereo and Front Playback device: Creative SB Extigy
Default Read playback device: Creative SB Extigy
Default Center and LFE playback device: Creative SB Extigy
and there where no other option under those drop down menu to choose, just Creative SB Extigy.
When I select Direct Sound Surround Mapper, under those drop down combos i saw the following:
Default Stereo and Front Playback device: Left/Right Front
Default Read playback device: Left/Right Rear
Default Center and LFE playback device: Center/LFE
what i'm not sure is, do I need to use Vegas to rip out the audio files from the actual DVD in order for 5.1 to work? because the audio file i got is ripped out by other program.
please assist, because I dont get other help than yours.
again, I appreciate your time. thanks!!

I have no idea what you are saying here.
You have to mix the audio in Vegas to make it come out of a specific speaker. I don't have an extigy, so I can tell you how to set this up.
i have a a few music dvds, in those two dvds, i like certain songs. i want to make my own selected songs from those two dvds.
first i used dvd-decrypter to extract the songs that i like. i import those songs into vegas and make my own edit and stuffs...
and i want those songs to come out 5.1 dobly. but when i finish editing my own video. i burned into a dvd but when its play, only come out 2 chanel. no 5.1 even though my vegas project sound was set to 5.1 why is that? i dont understand.
i looked into help/index of vegas and its said in order to get 5.1 i need a 5.1 sound card, which i went and bought the extigy. but how come its still not working?
The sound card has nothing to do with this. The sound card is for "listening" to vegas' output. You need an audio card that is capable of monitoring through 6 channels so you can "hear" what the Vegas mix will sound like. Rendering does not care about the sound card you are using, or its capabilities.
You need to encode with AC3 in surround mode.
-Set your Vegas project to Surround mode.
-Select "Render As..." from the File menu.
-Locate/select "Dolby Digital AC-3" from in the "Save as type:" combo box in the Render As dialog.
- Set the template to "5.1 Surrround DVD".
- Click OK.
This will render the audio as a AC-3 encoded audio file that you can then import into DVD Architect or what ever software you use for burning, assuming it supports AC-3 encoded audio streams.
i did like you told, but it only rendered the audio into ac3 yes its 5.1 dolby. so thats mean i have to render audio and video separately? and when i obtain AC3 audio file, just import into dvd-architect and create my dvd. is there any way we can render both AC3 sound and video together? just to save time...
so Peter, it is useless to buy a new sound card... but i thought vegas required a 5.1 sound card to do 5.1 sound mix. well, thanks for the info.
also, this question is unrelated to this topic. previously i made a dvd video and when i put in the bose player i saw the audio name is "afar 5.1" . is there any ways i can name the audio into like such as...dolby digital, dts, or whatever name i like... can i do that?
i dont know how to thank you, i really happy cuz now its work. i appreciate your time here with me. i feel like your my tech support... :0) thanks again Peter!!!
No, you cannot render AC-3 and the Video together.
There are options in the Render As dialog that produce DVD specific Video and then the AC-3 surround. Just the way it is.
Again, the audio hardware DOES let you mix. It lets you LISTEN to the mix you are creating. It has nothing to do with rendering the final output. In fact, what you here after encoding to AC-3 will be different than what you hear because the AC-3 encoding process adjusts the audio by defauilt. You can change this default behavior by
1- Learning about AC-3 and what it does to an audio stream
2- setting up a new template in Vegas to produce the desire results.
I don't know the answer to the 'afar 5.1" question. We just don't have every possible combination of hardware that is available. I would contact the hardware vendor.
hi peter,
when i rendered to ac-3 5.1 sound, the sound volume got lower. why is that? and is there any ways we can make the sound volume higher and more powerful? because i compared with the original mp3 sound, its louder and bolder than the ac3 5.1 dolby.
also, when i finished rendered my film into mpeg2, avi, etc... i imported that into DVD Architech 2.0 (DVDA) to create my dvd. when i click "make dvd" in DVDA, its render again. why? is there any trick to make dvda not rendering it again.
Render your video using MPEG-2, change the template to DVD-A video stream (NTSC or PAL depending on your region).
Then render the audio using AC-3..
If the audio is just music, use the Music template
Click the Custom button
On the Audio Service page, Set the Audio coding mode to 3/2 and enable LFE.
On the Pre-processing page set the Dynamic range compressions to None.
If the audio is dialog and music and the music is most important to you;
Use the 5.1 template.
Click the Custom button.
On the Audio Service page, set the Dialog Normalization to -31.
On the Pre-processing page set the Dynamic range compressions to None.
If you name both files the same name and save both streams to the same folder, when you drop the video in DVD-A it should grab the audio automatically. Every once in a while it doesn't for me, If not add it manually.
"In fact, what you here after encoding to AC-3 will be different than what you hear because the AC-3 encoding process adjusts the audio by defauilt. You can change this default behavior by

What this means is that
- You need to understand what AC-3 does to an audio stream and why.
- What a "template is"
This will solve you problem, but you will have to do some reading and research to understand it all. Remember, Learning is Good<g>
Video rendering is the same thing. There are tons of details here, and guess what, all of it is contained in the Users' Guides or in the help system. You should look through the knowlegebase here as well. A wealth of information in there.
MJ,
i tried your way and yes DVDA did pulled the video file with the audio file together, but again DVDA still render the film again when i click "make dvd". is there any ways we can trick DVDA not to rendering the film twice since vegas did already.
