5.1 Surround Trouble

MAIstook wrote on 2/11/2006, 3:11 PM
I'm working in a 5.1 project and when I use automation controls to pan audio left or right, the panning isn't consistent with the keyframe. For instance, I can have the keyframe panned all the way left, but I still get 50% audio out of the right meter, or vice versa, including center channel volume when it's faded all the way to the rear speakers. I know it's not my speaker setup -- I can see on the VU meters that the levels aren't consistent with where the should be based on where I'm trying to pan the audio. Any ideas??

i've seen this same issue but not figured out why. only fix has been a new track for me or kill all the keyframe, remove automation and start agin.

my thoughts.. is that u guys are sending this track also to a bus ,, which is not a part og your keyfr seq.. perhaps used as for reverb or something like that,,,, i wouldnt know,, but my guess is this..
never had this problem my self..and i´ve done allot of 5,1

I have not. But I have noticed it usually occurs on tracks with lots of surround pan keyframes, volume evenlope points etc.

Ditto here,

I've also encountered this problem, my solution is the same as Stephenw described (not my favorite fix, but until there's another way).
I am not using any additional busses (as Biggi T suggested, good troubleshooting tip though) but many surround keyframes within a short time period.
I have attributed it to sound card "latency" (I'm currently using the Direct Sound Surround Mapper option - since I don't have an interface that would allow ASIO drivers, et. al) - hoping that what the meters / surround panning keyframes were showing would not actually be reflected in the actual "rendered"/mixed audio. No such luck, the audio has usually ended in the wrong place, wrong time - so back to the initial solution... Delete all keyframes and/or track and start over.
So, to summarize, I've had the same problem (doesn't happen all the time) and I don't know of a specific reason why...

What panning model are you using? (Right click on the Surround Pan control. )

Peter,
Typically I am using the Film panning model for most of my projects - I can't swear that's the only mode I've used when it's happened.
