5D2 and 30 via 29.97 to 25...

I have found that 29.97 isn't ideal if you want to have 25 fps as your final master...

The 5D2 camera is 30 fps. Studying what happens during motion...:

After converting to 29.97 you can spot some double/shadows and artifacts.

If converting to 25 fps (Europe) then you will get artifacts on artifacts...

Editing 30 fps and not changing this until the final coding seems to give a slightly better looking 25 fps version in the end.

So having the 5D2 footage on the timeline with the project set for 30 fps appears to give better quality.

Anyone..?

Converting 30 fps progressive to 25 fps progressive is incredibly difficult to do cleanly. There is really no ideal way to accomplish this task.

Unfortunately this is very true. However, it does not get better by first converting from 30 to 29.97 and then to 25.

At least not after seeing on the screen what I see here. 30 to 29.97 gives shadows/ghosts etc. Then a second conversion and I see more bad stuff.

If I compare a 30 > 25 that looks better than a 30 > 29.97 > 25.

Does that make sense?

Yes, your footage is going through two lots of frame blending.

There are better ways to do this, After Effects has some very good algorithms but even those can be broken giving horrid results and it takes forever to render due to the massive amount of computation involved. Certainly worth a try though.

You'd also want to do this early on in the process, converting audio from 30fps to 25fps is very problematic to say the least.

I'd also recommend converting to 24p not 25p as 24p is universal for both Region50 and Region60.

If you want to end up at 25p shoot at 25p.

If you can't do that, shoot at 24p and run it at 25p (Cineform will help you with this). (You will need to adjust the audio separately if you are using the audio from the camera).

Oh, and if you are using Cineform, do not manually convert the 5D2 footage from 30 to 29.97 - this is already taken care of during the Cineform capture process.

Hi! Thanks for the good advice. There are good reasons for why I shoot this with a 5D2 camera.

Of course, that camera would be much easier to handle for a more broad range of assignments if it was 24/25/29.97 switch.

The camera has certain distinct advantages for what I'm doing so I will accept the 30 only for the time being.

When I record ping pong I'm not using the 5D2... ;)
