jrr -

I'm still a V5 user, but was interested to note that a by-product of the MPG stream import meant that AC3 files could be read.

A couple of questions:

Can you import AC3 on it's own (as per the file that you would create for a DVD-A project)?

What happens when you import 5.1 AC3 - do you get surround ouput (assuming your project is in surround)?

Can you edit AC3 - cut it, change volume, apply effects etc - in plain english, can you treat it as you would a WAV file?

thanks

No. Only AC-3 embedded in the VOB files.

Ok, so I guess you could then render out a new stereo WAV file for editing. -but what happens with an embedded 5.1 AC3?

Can you mute the existing AC3 vob audio?

AFAIK when you import a VOB file Vegas actually creates an MPEG2 file from it - including 2 channel (i.e. stereo) audio. Even when the VOB originally had an 5.1 AC3 track the resulting audio will just be a 2 channel downmix of it.

True - it's not perfect yet... Even if the mpeg stream has a 5.1 AC3 track, it will import into the timeline only as a stereo track, but that is a vast improvement over the former position ;-)

Of course, it doesn't have to be a VOB. A properly muxed mpeg II video / ac3 audio file is all that's required, such as you get from 'quickstream fixing' a digital TV recording with VideoReDo works just fine...

So I hadn't heard about VideoReDo before. After a quick search and look at their web page, it sounds good. So from what you said, it is capable of preserving 5.1 AC3 audio after edits. Is that correct?

I may be a customer soon. Wanted a reasonably priced, efficient editor for mpeg and good audio support is great icing on the cake.

Sure is. A very useful little tool. Highly recommended.
