No, mini-DV tapes can be up to 83 minutes for regular def recording.

I use the Panisonic PQ 83 minute tapes and have never had a problem. They are thinner and supposedly more prone to error (and that makes sense logically) but I have never had one snap or problems that wouldn't have happened with the 60min tapes (dropped frames for example).
B&H sells them the cheapest unless you are a WEVA member and then you can get them a little cheaper from the tape store (I think that is the name- I have it saved in my favorites)

Are 80 min only for HD?

If anything, just the reverse. Given the long-GOP dropout issue with HDV, I would never think of using the thinner 80 minutes tapes with HDV. Like others, I have used them on a B-roll camera -- in LP mode no less -- when I have to leave a camera "grinding" on its own during a long wedding ceremony or lengthy stage performance.

John,

I use the 83 minute Panasonic PQ tapes in both my A1U's and record to HDV. I have recoreded over 17 events on one and 7 on the other since purchasing them in HDV and have not had problems with the tapes. Am I missing something or just the luckiest guy in the world? :)
