60i>DVDA 24p WSC - Let Me Count the Ways

MH_Stevens wrote on 5/30/2006, 12:47 PM
The options for going from 1080-60i to DVDA NTSC 24p Widescreen DVD (NOT to print to tape for FILM) seem to be increasing to bewilderment. I can capture with CineForm (select 2-3-3-2 pulldown with De-interlace) or I can capture with CineForm the m2t's and convert with DVFilm maker or Magic Bullet or with the new thing Spot spoke highly of a couple of days ago, or I can capture with CineForm the interlaced .AVIs and convert in Vegas by just dropping them onto a 24p timeline or then there is the other Vegas way of a pre-edit render as described in Spots several year-old tutorial (which may be out of date seeing that I think he now advocates the last method above) and then I could forget CineForm and capture with DivX to a Vegas 24p timeline, etc, etc.

My research says that Magic Bullet is the best algorithm around but it is too expensive for me to get but I do have have Cineform. Which way for me to go then?

Spot: I could find a free updated tutorial on the VASST site - is this well explained in your new Vegas training DVDs?

Michael

There was an excellent 24p tutorial posted here just a few days ago. Do a search.

The tutorial did not cover 60i to 24p.

Jimersons Tutorial was limited to captured 24p. No conversion involved - but he has that coming he says. Get working David!

You want to know the best way to do this?

Send it out to a post house with the right S&W box. These beasts do adaptive motion compensation that looks many frames in either direction and in real time.

Certainly more expensive than doing it yourself but the results I'm told are as good as it gets. Whether they're able to ingest and output DV25 might be an issue.

If you factor in the cost of good de-interlacing software and add a bit for your time what they charge could be a bargain.

Have you tried just rendering from vegas ? DVDA 24p ntsc widescreen 2-3 pulldown
no idea if it is decent, but worth a try

This is exactly what I do winrock (but not widescreen). I have no idea yet if it's the "best" way, but it does provide an organic look that works well for some stuff.

There is a lot about this over at doom9.org. They have some amazingly exotic motion-compensated software.

Winrock:
One thing I hear most people say is you must convert to 24p BEFORE you edit/addFX for reasonable results. You just cant render a 60i project to 24p or just change the project properties to 24p for good results.

Bob:

I'm looking for the best cheap down-home solution. I said Magic Bullet was too expensive for my needs so out sourcing is not for me. Anyway, I'm an enthusiast and I want to do it at home while I'm putting away a few beers and working on my theory of nothing in my spare time.

Michael, this is still the IDEAL way to do things, but the easiest way is to:
1. Open 23.976 project.
2. Insert 60i media
3. Edit
4. Render to DVD Architect 23.976 template.
Done.

Douglas; That's good enough for me. Thanks
