980X - 6 core i7 monster

In a few weeks Intel will be releasing a 6 core LGA-1366 pin i7 CPU called the 980X. It's looking to be a monster for video editing. 3.33GHz, 6 physical cores + 6 logical cores (hyperthreading).

See review here: http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3763

If you already have an LGA-1366 compatible motherboard (i.e. running a 920 now) then this would be a worthy upgrade to extend the life of your current motherboard and memory. It is expensive but if you've gotta have the fastest...

Are you trying to tell me that my 3.0Ghz Pentium 4 is no longer "state of the art" ?!?!?
What they really need to do is spend the time coming up with some good video clips we can show our wives that would convince THEM we need a new processor :-)

Do you hear that.. Mr. Anderson? That is the sound of inevitability.

My motherboard is about two years old and all those numbers are Greek to me.

gpsmikey,

Hmm. I would say this new cpu is about 15x faster than your current P4!

Perroneford,

I love that line! When he has Neo pinned down in the subway track and hears the train coming. Perfect reference.

Hope they come out with a non-extreme version in the near future. I really would like to run a 6 ( my 3D model rendering would certainly benefit, but man $1K for just the chip is a bit heavy for this thrifty spender ).

Rather than look at it as $1k just for the chip, think of it as an all-new computer with all your software pre-installed and all your legacy files moved over. However, in this house, part of the price is the new pair of Italian shoes that is attached :)

My wife is going to be in Shanghai on business next month and she'd be glad to hit the various street markets for you.
On her last trip there she got several "genuine" fashion accessories for really good prices :-)

watch out those "fake" Intel cpu chips that's being passed around!
