A Bug? Bad Registry Entries

Hi All,

I use Ontrack System Suite's Registry Checker every now and then. Recently I encountered several bad Registry entries pointing to missing files, such as these examples:

C:\Program Files\Sonic Foundry\Shared Plug-Ins\File Formats\MP3\mp3plug.lng

C:\Program Files\Sonic Foundry\Shared Plug-Ins\File Formats\MP3\mp3rw.lng

C:\Program Files\Sonic Foundry\Shared Plug-Ins\File Formats\MCMPEG\mcplug.lng

The ".lng" files are non-existent, but there are corresponding ".dll" files. I deleted the Registry entries that pointed to the missing ".lng" files. This would seem to be a bug in one of my Sonic Foundry programs. It could be Vegas Video 3, Sound Forge 6, or ACID Pro 4 (which was my most recent acquisition). Actually, I suspect ACID but don't know for sure which Sonic Foundry app installed the bogus Registry entries. Has anyone seen this? I will also post this in the ACID forum.

I have those files. I think they are supposed to contain the app's messages in another language.

Tor,

Interesting. I wonder how come you have them and I don't. Did you buy your Vegas Video 3 in the box, with the CDROM? I bought mine as a download. Oh, well. Now that I deleted the bad Registry entries, nothing seems to be broke, so "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." [grin]

Burton,
I have a Norwegian version of Win98 installed. This means that many messages (and folders' names) are in Norwegian. Some of my installed apps make use of the Norwegian set of messages for standard procedures, some don't. Some install separate sets of existing folders because they don't recognise the non-English names and don't bother to chech the Registry properly. After a time my PC is a mess of mixed languages. And it's not only non-Microsoft apps that act confusingly in this area.
I want to believe your Registry entries is a part of Sonic Foundries installer's attemt to make use of your operating system's language version, and the lack of referred files is a result of it deciding it's not neccessary after all.
I tried to open one of the files in a text reader and it's full of gibberish, while its counterpart (referred from another app) actually contained some sense-making Norwegian.
Your conclusion, though, I go along with: Don't fix it.

Theses files are actually plugin files. One is the MainConcept Mpe plugin and the others are for the Mp3 plugin. I'm speaking about the dlls here. I don't know for the .lng, but peharps there was a translation of the plugins intended or something like that.

Yes, those registry entries correspond to localization files for the strings in the dialogs of the corresponding dlls. Having those file missing will not affect Sonic Foundry apps as the corresponding strings are within the dll as well. It's OK to leave these entries as they will not affect the apps. You can also delete them if youd like. BTW, our un-installer will take care of cleaning up all of the reg entries upon unistall so there are no worries that these will be left behind.
