A Calm Word of Advice . . BACKUP? . . .

Grazie wrote on 3/26/2008, 1:32 AM
Oh yes ..

However, after trying everything I could this morning, I could NOT for the life of me, stop items within Vegas being selected en-bloc. I tried defrag, clean up and what ever I tried I would click on ONE item within a folder and ALL would be selected .. penny not dropping? I tried Folders. They worked separately, but only SOME of them. I tried files, still no joy. So I tried vain attempt to try DIFFERENT combination of CTRL+ . . . You there yet?

A STUCK f!"$"ng SHIFT key!!! Not had THAT B4!

So, Backup? Oh yes . . But just check that shift key. Maybe as it IS early Spring a clean up of all those mechanicals? Some AIR blow . . .

A stuck shift key . . . .

Breathe out Grazie . . and . . . r - e - l - a - x

Love you all . . . .

Glad you sorted it Grazie.

I seem to remember Zippy having a similar problem ....

Pete . . I couldn't believe it. Really!

I haven't actually experienced this B4. I HAVE had stuck keys and then cleaned. But it was my total, panicky, unawareness of it all that jumped up at me - yeah? And now when I hear of such symptoms, and IF my memory cell is functioning, I'll advise this - first, B4 any ANY Restore/Backup procedures. Oh yes! The REALLY frightening thing was that CTRL+ALT+DEL for Task Manager wouldn't respond. DRAMA!

. . chill .. . .

The funny thing? It was last night, and now it makes sense, I thought I had discovered a NEW VidFX and Audio Level Connection. I'd alter the VidLevels and the SOUND would alter too!! Amazing! Now, it would seem, I had a sticky shift key that WAS not rel;easing the AUDIO Event - bah . .. glad I didn't post it as a feature. I would have looked like a real buffoon. Hell's Teeth! I just gone and done it!!

Grazie . . . .

I feel for you. One of the apps I work with requires one to hold down the shift key while double clicking it. Now sometimes I don't dbl click fast enough so I dbl click again, before I realise I've selected evey file in the folder. So I just sit back in horror as Windoz proceeds to open every file.
Doing that with a folder full of veg files could really get the adrenaline going.
And now i just discovered Windoz 'sticky key feature'

Windows Sticky-Keys is evil for those who don't need it. True, it's very useful for some folks who can't coordinate two hands at once. It's caused me awful grief over the years though. The most annoying 'feature' is that even if you disable it completely, it will decide at some unspecified future moment when you least expect it that perhaps it really should be active after all and turn itself back on.

I had me a sticky ol' keyboard years back. Standard procedure first thing in the morning and after breaks was to pound the Shift, Ctl, and Alt keys hard several times to get them unstuck before attempting to do anything else. *sigh* Back in the days when cheap keyboards cost more than $15 and the boss wouldn't let me replace them as long as some of the keys still worked.

Yikes!

Throw that keyboard in the dishwasher! (No. Don't!.)

Want a good keyboard?

Buy a Unicomp. They are Made in USA. They are heavy, they make a noise, you can replace individual switches. These are the same keyboards made by IBM for their 5251 terminals. I never saw one fail despite them being used as ashtrays back in the days when we had a System 34.
Cost me around $150. Best money I ever spent.

I buy two or three of the $15 models. When one gets dirty, I throw it away and open another one. Will your $150 keyboard last ten years?

Actually, the symptom of the "Sticky-Shift" has come about 'cos of me stretching for SHIFT+M for the Pre-render option. This has meant that I have been slightly applying unequal pressure to the Shift key and this has meant that the key itself is/has been displaced sideways.

OK, now having the QUADIE I now use SHIFT+M a lot of the time, to "proof" small precise sections - I like to SEE what I have in real time. I guess a Script or even at least a better K/S to do the same would be neat.

8 years so far and still going strong but that's not the real advantage. You can actually type on this keyboard because it has very tactile feedback due to the buckling springs that tells your brain the key is pressed. The springs themselves also make a 'click' when the key is pressed. It feels much like typing on an electric typewriter.

The only pity is I can't touch type :)

Yes Bob, but what you DO write is well worth reading. I'll take that over an ability to do even more words, with potentially vacuous meaning and and even less perception!

You keep 'em stubbies working - Bob!

Now that I've stopped blushing, here's a couple of words to consider:

Digital Signage.

Did some work on one such project today and it could offer a lot of business potential. Dead boring work shooting food etc but it'd more than pay the rent and it could be an ongoing income stream. Big LCD monitors are so cheap today it could be cheap enough even for restaurants in smaller towns. If you can learn the art of food decorating as well you could make it more profitable.
