A cruel joke - capturing HDV on vegas

Nothing on any of the forums addresses the problems we've had getting Vegas to capture HDv from our sony FX1. I'm beginning to think it's a farce. I've installed Vegas on two computers so far.

When we plug our FX1 camera into a computer running Vegas 6.c via the firewire. Windows installs the drivers and it works just fine, but it's not HDV!

In the capture diologue your given two options IEEE1394/MPEG2-T2 and Blackmagic Design Decklink, it doesn't matter which we choose Device Not Available is the answer we get.

We've been pouring over the forums including this one, yest we've tried all the stuff with device manager etc. and nothing works. I'm beginning to think buying Vegas was a BIG BIG mistake!!

Buying a Vegas is far from a big mistake. My business is based around it and it is by far the most stablest software that I use. As for capturing HDV- try HDV Split. Google it. It is a free download and works perfectly.

I bet you make friends whereever you go.

Try using the INTERNAL capture program instead of the EXTERNAL capture program. The Internal capture program captures HDV.

No problems capturing hdv here - But jetdv is right - you gotta' use the "internal" capture. Better still, get Cinneform Connect HD

Seriously, can you provide the exact steps you are following? How does it deviate from:

Camera: Did you record to HDV or DV? Is it set up to transfer HDV via firewire, or DV? (see the manual). Do another test video, make sure the big blue HDV is lit on the top left side of the cam.

Plug in firewire cable. Turn on Camera to VCR

Vegas:
1) select capture video. you should get a dialog box to select Internal or External capture. HDV is Internal. Set the capture folder. select Record. Stop when done. You should end up with a *.m2t file in the capture folder.

2) start a new Vegas project. Properties should be HDV (not sure if you are NTSC or PAL). import m2t file to project, drag/drop on timeline.

You should now have a HDV project with HDV clip on the timeline.

I've captured extensively from both an FX1 and an HD100. No hiccups.

I'd wager that you've got the Downconvert enabled on the camera if you're able to capture HDV as DV.
Go into the camera menu, and set it for either "Auto" or for HDV output with DV disabled.
Many of us capture and edit HDV in Vegas every day, it's definitely your setup, not the application

You say it's NOT HDV????

So is what you've captured plain old DV??

If that's the case then you're probably:

a) Got the camera set to downcovert
b) You didn't shoot HDV to start with

AND you're probably using the wrong capture method in Vegas.
As said above you MUST use internal capture.

Bob.

PS Don't blame this on Vegas, I work for a rental company and no matter what edit system the client uses I'd say 40% still have major grief getting the VCR / Camera set right to start with.

I have no problems capturing HDV with Vegas 6.od and Cineform from the Z1.

Not a chance!!!
As everyone else has said here, there are certain steps to be followed to enable Vegas to capture HDV.
I borrowed a friend's Z1 a few weeks ago to do some testing for a chromakey shoot. With the advice from this forum (as pointed out repeatedly in this thread), it took me less than 10 minutes to configure my computer properly and start capturing.

Thanks a bunch! I'm so used to software/windows problems that sometimes I forget that hardware requires a bit of setup too. When I set the FX-1 to "HDV out" Vegas did the appropriate things - on one computer anyway - I think now that I have it working on one, I'll have the confidence to try wrestling with the other.
thanks again.
