A Few Beginner Questions

Hello everyone, I am looking for a new NLE, as I've been using Pinnacle Studio 7 for a few years now. I downloaded the Vegas demo, and I like it, but there are a few things I haven't figured out how to do. Please forgive me if the answers are obvious; I searched through help but couldn't find them.

1. Is there any way to get video clips in the timeline to only display the first frame of the clip, instead of many seqenced frames?

2. Say I have a video clip, and I want to get a song the same length of the video clip. Can I set clips to snap to the start or end of other clips?

3. Is it possible to select a clip without changing the cursor position? Everytime I click on a clip, the cursor goes to where I click, but I want the cursor to not move.

Thanks for any help! (I hope I explained everything well enough)

on your question 2. double click the video clip. It should now be highlighted. when you bring in your audio clip and drag to the front of the video clip, it should snap to (make sure you have the snap option turned on...on the toolbar it is the arrow and the asterisk looking button right above the 00:00:00:00 of the timeline.) If you want the video/audio to be a certain length,
in an empty space on the timeline click and drag a selection to the length you would like, and the media you want in that length double click in the media pool, it should fit to that legth you set up...

1) No

2) Double click the event, snap your audio to the in point (now aligned to the time selection), Ctrl/Drag the outpoint to the length you need.

3) Ctrl/Click

Solution number 3 is a work around. Ctrl+click selects the first event or additional events if one is already selected. So if you already have an event selected somewhere the ctrl+click adds this new event to the set of selected events.

If you want to be sure that nothing is selected, key ctrl+shift+a to "deselect all" and then start ctrl-clicking.

This set of key commands is pretty common throughout most windows apps so they should be familiar and easy to learn.

Thanks everyone! I appreciate your answers very much. Now I have questions 2 & 3 answered. Too bad there's no way to change number 1. Maybe it'll be customizable in the next version...

Your options for #1 are all or none.

Lloyd66,

Just curious on #1- why would you want to change it to ONLY display the first frame? The ability to see different frames across the duration of the clip in the timeline was a feature that I always wished that Studio had.

Well, I've gotten used to Studio's interface, and the multiple frames in Vegas make everything look cluttered to me. Also, I have trouble telling whether the clip is selected or not if there is little room between the frames.

Fortunately, Vegas beats the socks off Studio in every other category!!

When you select the clip the color of the clip changes.

This is very easy to see with audio clips, but can be tricky with video depending on what your video is. One tip would be to make your video track wider. That makes it more apparent.

You will forget about Studio and its interface in about a week or two, don't worry about it.
