a few more HD Q's

I looked through some recent threads and couldn't quite find the answer to my questions, hopefully I don't trouble someone too much with the following:

If/ when/ until DVDA-5 is available...using Vegas to burn directly to disc, and starting with .m2ts files @ 17Mbps from an AVCHD camcorder, will rendering using the mpeg-2 1920x1080 25Mbps codec result in video quality that is as good as the original? Or am I better off waiting for DVDA-5 to hopefully have a direct AVCHD render, where I can also hopefully have the ability to choose a CBR of 17Mbps to fit more footage onto a disc?

And does anyone have experience with using Vegas to burn directly to a dual-layer DVD? Any problems?

I guess I'm really just confused with all these different HD file types out there. All along I have been used to old fashioned SD DVD where there were no options, just mpeg-2 which was a lossy codec. But now with HD/ AVCHD there seems to be close to lossless codecs.

Thanks in advance

I've burned four blu-rays without problems. The original was Sony's HDV. I made one with mpeg2 one with AVCHD. I played them on a 40" plasma. I couldn't see the difference in quality. However, the AVCHD file was smaller.

I've also burned about 7 hours of DV footage onto a blu-ray. It looked as good as the original.

I've also burned a 720p file from a cannon HD camcorder and it looked fantastic.

I do not have a ray burner. I burn AVCHD format on DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, and DVD+R DL. I have wonderful results in all cases. Most burns are from the Vegas timeline, but I also occasionally use ULEAD MF+.

I use only the MainConcept MPG template because it is much more flexible than the Sony AVC template. I have built presets for 1920x1080i, 1920x1080p, and 1280x720p (30 and 24 fps). All have a bit rate of 18 Mbps because I find that my Sony BDP-S300 will not play AVCHD disk smoothly at a higher rate. I use 1920x1080p for slide shows, 1280x720p for video projects originating from my native 720p camera.

On DL disks there is no visible layer break on either my S300 or on my PC using VLC.
