"A stream could not be read" error message

fherr wrote on 5/16/2002, 9:48 AM
This is more of a minor annoyance than a major problem. I often right-click on an audio track and select "Open in Sound Forge". After I work on it in Sound Forge and save it and return to Vegas, I almost always get the error message "An error occurred during the current operation. A stream could not be read". The audio track plays properly but shows nothing on the screen except "(Peaks not available)". Anyone know how I can fix this? Thanks in advance for any hints.

No one else has had this error message after editing an audio track in Sound Forge?
Cheesehole wrote on 5/18/2002, 12:28 AM
it sounds like a timing issue. Vegas tries to access the file while Sound Forge has it locked for editing. I'm not sure what can be done to fix it... are you working on an extremely slow system? just a guess really.

to get the peaks back, does "Rebuild Audio Peaks" work for you?
fherr wrote on 5/19/2002, 2:49 PM
It does the same thing on both my office system and my home system, neither of which are that old (nor are they state of the art, but P2's anyway, I forget the exact specs off the top of my head). "Rebuild audio peaks" doesn't work - just gives me the same error message again. The only way to recover the audio peaks is to close the veg file, open another one, close it and then reopen the first file. No data is ever lost or currupted, even if I just carry on working on the file without the audio peaks, but I just wondered if this was either a known bug or perhaps something I'm doing wrong in the sequence of editing the file in SF and VV. Thanks for the ideas though.

A bit more data in case anyone (e.g., from Sonic Foundry) is interested: today after I got the error message I described above, I carried on and actually edited the sound file a second time in Sound Forge. Once I finished and saved it, upon returning to VV this time I got different error message which then froze VV altogether. Error details:
