You might try installing the QuickTime 6 preview from Apple's website. The "MPEG-4 Video" codec shows up under the Render As > Custom button. You can create templates using it. It might work, but I haven't tried it myself.

I too am interested in exporting files directly from Vegas Video to MP4 format.
Quicktime Pro for Windows is a great conversion utility, though it it doesn't work that well as a viewer on Windows systems, and I haven't tried it yet for MP4 conversion ( I plan to soon though). You'll need a Quicktime Pro serial number to use the version 6 preview edition, and when the full version 6 comes out, MP4 encoding will be a separately licensed (and paid for) option. Quicktime Pro 6 preview edition is available at :

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/preview/quicktime6/

By the way, if you've ever tried working with .mov files, you'll find that Vegas Video will work with them, and that the Batch Converter will convert them as well, but that the quality is absolutely terrible. This is because Sonic Foundry products use Apples routines to do the conversion. Quicktime Pro will do this conversion at full quality however, which is invaluable if you want to swap video clips between Final Cut Pro and Vegas Video.

Also, you might want to check out the following link:

They have links to a program called FlaskMpeg which is the main program that people use to convert video files to MP4 format on Windows systems.
