AC-3 and other software

This is a repost from an earlier, less related topic. Can anyone say if AC-3 encoders are standardized enough to be interchangeable between V4 and other software? I'm thinking of upgrading my sound card and I note that some of them install an AC-3 encoder with the hardware drivers. Is that usable from within V4 as in a plugin?

If you check carefully you may see that they are AC3 Decoders not encoders. Unless you paid big dollars I think you will find this to be the case. To the best of my knowlege, the decoders are not shared.

Thanks for the wisdom. Well, missed my chance to get V4+DVD. Have to save up for the upgrade now.
