AC3 files BACK into Vegas

Curious,
If I'm supposed to render files for DVD as seperate video and audio, and the audio files are .ac3 format, why can't I bring that same .ac3 file back into Vegas for editing.

I've had some files I've done as DVDs and later want to go back and upload to the web. Since they are already rendererd...when I try to import the audio back into Vegas, it's not compatable. HUH ?? It come from here...why not. In one case I didn't have the original .veg file to make a render from.

I now know there are precautions I can take....save an extra copy in a vegas format... don't get rid of the .veg files... so please spare me the lecture. I was just curios as to WHY...or am I missing something?

Did you try importing the DVD into a project? It should bring the audio with it.

Vegas generates other video and audio formats that it cannot read. Normally these are considered delivery formats, not source formats.

hmmm, I'm not sure I know how to import the DVD. If you're talking physical DVD, this time I didin't have it.. just the .mpg and .ac3 files. Although I could burn one with those two.

You can Prepare a dvd folder in Architect, and open the VTS_01_0.IFO file in Vegas; or,
Mux the .mpg and .ac3 in AviDemux.
The second way goes really quickly.
I presume the lack of native support for .ac3 has to do with their licensing with Dolby.

Yep, that's a well documented gripe. Just seems illogical to be able to create something - then not be able to import it back into the same software.

Unless you're the licensor of the format.
