AC3 output contains only silence ?

I am running Vegas 4.0d on Windows 2k SP4. I have found that Vegas will generate an AC3 output file which is completely silent, if I render my sound to AC3 immediately after opening a video project, without first listening to the sound. If I play it back from the timeline first before rendering, then the AC3 track is rendered correctly. Seems like some kind of initialization bug? Has anyone else observed this?

I have also had a number of instances where Vegas will render completely silent sound if I move the clips around a lot.

What I do:

1.) Render, say, the first 5 minutes of a clip (NTSC-DV, *.avi). All works great.
2.) Delete the part I just rendered.
3.) Move the 00:05:00:01 to the beginning of the timeline.
4.) Now, if I render the next 5 minutes, OFTEN, there will be no sound althought it plays from the timeline just fine.

I find I have to close, then reopen Vegas, and all will render fine.

I have had this happen on a number of occasions.

I just tried doing both operations described above, AC-3 renders perfectly. Any other suggestions you can offer to help us repro here would be appreciated-
