Academic Version of Software?

I am looking to purchase VV 3.0 and have found a source (micromasteron-line) that offers an academic version of the software. They contend its identical to the retail version. All I need to do is show my college ID to get a significant discount. Does anyone have any experience with a purchase like this. Any drawbacks?

Academic versions are usually identical to the retail version. They're offered at a significant discount to get students to invest their time in learning the software...the thinking is that, after graduation, the student will continue to use and purchase the companies products.

I purchased the academic version of VV3 and it is fully functional. No difference!
